Dear Hunter:

I hope this finds you well.  This is a quick update on recent developments at Madison and my own practice areas of energy, financial regulation, and governance.  I'm glad to announce our client roster now includes OPower.  OPower is a remarkable firm that works with utilities to help consumers reduce their electricity use.  OPower has experienced tremendous growth, creating 200 jobs in Northern Virginia, and the respected venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caulfield & Byers invested $50 million in OPower's recent round of strategic financing.  President Obama recently visited OPower's headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, to discuss clean energy policy.  We'll be working with OPower on both advocacy and strategic projects.  I urge you to familiarize yourself with this exciting company.

In other news, we are expanding our financial regulation practice, and are looking to take on one or two new clients in the coming year.  We counsel insitutional and alternative investors on the risks and opportunities presented by U.S. regulations regarding commodities, futures, derivatives, swaps, broker-dealers, and high-frequency trading, with a special focus on the 2010 Dodd-Frank Bill.  We also monitor the regulation of foreign products of interest to U.S. investors.  We specifically tailor our guidance to help clients in trading strategies.
Our deliverables include memoranda, research papers, conference calls, and presentations.  I'd greatly appreciate any referrals -- please email me at msigner@madisonpllc.com.

And in our governance work, we are working with the Center for a New American Security to develop a new project about the national security implications of democracy promotion -- obviously a charged, highly relevant topic, given recent developments in North Africa and the Middle East.

I also wanted to give you an update on a non-Madison-related matter.  As you know, I remain very involved in public service and activism in Virginia.  Earlier this year, with the help of a steering committee including dozens of leaders from around Virginia, I launched the New Dominion Project (NDP), a political action committee supporting innovation and reform in Virginia.

One of our activities includes the promotion of "Featured Virginia Stories" about Virginia entrepreneurs and companies whose narratives put a human face on policy.  Examples include the stories of David Brown and Edison2, a green car company in Lynchburg that won a $5 million grant for inventing a 100 mpg car, Pete Erickson and Disruptathon, an open innovation company in McLean that works with hundreds of app companies, and Brenda Robinson and the Sustainability Park, which has created 200 jobs in Chester, Virginia, on an old tobacco plant.

We're currently assembling a Business Advisory Council that will promote innovation and progressive policy Virginia.  We are off to a good start with business leaders in Arlington, Fairfax, and Charlottesville.  If you have suggestions of folks who run Virginia-based businesses and might be interested in being involved in NDP, or who could be subjects for our Featured Virginia Stories, I'd greatly appreciate a connection. And, of course, if you would like to support our political activities financially, please make a donation here.

Thanks very much for your support and friendship.  I look forward to staying in touch.

Sincerely,

Mike
