Thank you!  Please send other photos ASAP as we’re going to communicate to our system just as soon as we receive them.  Our World Hunger Relief campaign begins shortly so the sooner we receive, the better we can use this visit to create emotional engagement. Please ask David to email some, and put all others on a disc and overnight them to Dennis Whittington at YUM – 1441 Gardiner Lane, Louisville, KY 40213.  Telephone (502) 874-8586.   We’ll need them this week as I mentioned to him.  Many thanks for an incredible trip, Valerie.  Your team did an outstanding job organizing it on our behalf.  I will now share the stories and pictures with 1.4 million people in our system.

Regards, Jonathan

Back in Rome, missing you all.

A few initial photos from the Dadaab portion of the trip sent by Dorte, while we wait for the full set from PI. I have asked David Orr to pull together and send the set asap, through Rick.

Hope you enjoyed your reunion with family and got some well-deserved rest upon your return home.

Thanks for being so gracious, engaging and fun, and for your support and encouragement to all.

Best,

V

WFP USA High Level Delegation 21.9.2011:

  • Mr. Hunter Biden, Chair of WFP USA (incoming)
  • Mr. Jonathan Blum, Senior Vice President, Chief Public Affairs Officer, Yum! Brands
  • Mr. Rick Leach, Presidentand CEO, WFP USA

WFP hosted High Level WFP USA visit to Dadaab accompanied by Valerie Guarnieri WFP HQ & Pippa Bradford DCD. Full Participants list, itinerary and talking points attached for ease of reference.

The delegation visited 'Friends Primary School' and witnessed WFP School Meal Programme and Girls' Take Home Rations (Sugar).  The delegation continued to visit Ifo Reception Centre and Ifo WFP FDP/EDP followed by visit to GIZ Hospital. The field trip concludedwith a UNHCR walk through Ifo Extension(3) Tent City, before heading to WFP Compound for lunch and debriefing with Partners.

Purpose of the visit was to give the Delegation an overall understanding of the complexity of the Refugee situation and Dadaab large scale emergency operations. WFP in collaboration with namely UNHCR and CARE provided briefs to the delegates to add context and texture in the operational environment and refugee camps.

Points of relevance raised with WFP Senior Management by Emergency Response Team during the visit:

  1. The Emergency is not over
    - Still in high gear operationally with more than 1,000 daily arrivals and alarming malnutrition rates.
  1. Nutrition Survey
    -
preliminary results indicate famine persists with malnutrition rates well beyond emergency threshold i.e. Dagahaley outskirts GAM 38% with extraordinarily high SAM rate at 18%.
Sahar Nejat, Nutritionist will circulate results as they are released.
  1. Pipeline
    - importance of buffer stock (3 months) delivery prior to roads being cut off during rainy season October/November.
  1. Staffing
    -
critical to scale up response team in line with operational requirements

Lydia Wamala PI Officer covered the visit for internal advocacy purposes. Reasonable WFP visibility throughout the visit.
