Ted Cruz won Utah's caucuses, according to The Associated Press.
The Texas senator had been counting on a wide victory there as he tries to keep pace with Donald Trump in the fight for delegates.
Cruz earned late support in the contest from Mitt Romney, a beloved figure in Utah's prevalent Mormon community, as well as Gov. Gary Herbert. Both described Cruz as the only candidate capable of defeating Trump in the primary. Sen. Mike Lee had also endorsed Cruz, whose hardline conservative approach fit more neatly with Utah's Republican base than Trump's or John Kasich's.
