Dear Friends,After conducting an international search for a Lower School Principal, I am writing to announce that effective July 1, Sally Selby, former Sidwell Friends Middle School Principal and Assistant Head of School, will serve as Interim Lower School Principal for the 2017/18 academic year. A beloved teacher and administrator, Sally previously held this interim position for the 2001/02 school year, and has been renowned throughout her tenure for her thoughtful care of students, strong support of faculty, outstanding relationships with parents, and deep commitment to creating a vibrant intellectual environment infused with Quaker values. Despite her retirement from Middle School last year, Sally has fortunately not traveled far from our campus. For the past several months, she has been supporting the Board of Trustees in the strategic planning process and has remained well-informed on all SFS developments. She will work closely with Shereen Beydoun throughout the remainder of the semester and will be invaluable as she prepares our community for the appointment of a permanent principal. I want to thank the search committee, clerked by Lower School teacher Eve Eaton, as well as the Parent Advisory Committee, which interviewed three finalists culled from a competitive field of more than 120 applicants. After considering feedback on the finalists and consulting with our recruitment firm, it became clear that the School would be best served by appointing a wise and talented interim such as Sally and extending the search into next year.Please join me in thanking Sally for her willingness to serve the School. And thanks again to Shereen for her remarkable work. We are fortunate to have these two gifted educators collaborating to design and implement a successful transition at Lower School. Later in the semester, we will be sure to provide opportunities for Lower School parents to meet and/or re-greet Sally and express gratitude to Shereen for her outstanding leadership and friendship.
