Wednesday - November 17, 2010 From the School From Lee Palmer This fall has passed more quickly than I could ever imagine. This is a very busy time right now, but I hope we will all have a Thanksgiving break next week that is filled with joy, renewal, and reflection. Peace, LeeFrom Academic Dean Mamadou Gueye The Upper School has a homework policy that encourages teachers to require no more than 45 minutes, on average, of homework per subject per night. Certain nights will exceed and other nights will be below this average, but this is the goal for time spent on homework for each class each night. Students who regularly exceed this average (despite studying with a minimum of distractions) should speak with their teachers and advisors for guidance. Department heads and Academic Dean Gueye are also available for assistance at any time. The School's goal is to provide a strong academic structure that will still allow students to lead balanced, healthy lives. On Stage this Weekend ! The Real Inspector HoundThe Real Inspector Hound, by Tom Stoppard Friday, November 19, 2010 at 8:00 pm Saturday, November 20, 2010 at 8:00 pm Sunday, November 21, 2010 at 2:30 pm There's a chill in the air. . . and perhaps a chill reaching out for you from behind your chair! Chills meet laughs in this fall's upper school play, THE REAL INSPECTOR HOUND, by Tom Stoppard. Rave reviews greeted this masterpiece of farce when it was revived in London. Feuding theater critics Moon and Birdboot, the first a pompous and vindictive second stringer and the second a fusty philanderer, are swept into the "whodunnit" they are viewing. As mists rise about isolated Muldoon Manor in this hilarious spoof of Agatha Christie type melodramas, the critics become dangerously implicated in the lethal activities of an escaped madman. Sidwell's cast and crew are directed by Ed Crow. This year’s speaker is Dr. Eric Chivian, Founder and Director of the Center for Health and the Global Environment, and an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, at Harvard Medical School. He lived a physically rigorous and healthy lifestyle. After he died of melanoma in 1985, his parents established the Mark Watson Eager ’74 Award to encourage students to engage in physically challenging activities and explore the outdoor world. The recipient of this award receives the opportunity to develop new skills and test themselves in a physically demanding outdoor environment. The Mark Watson Eager Foundation awards a scholarship to one 11th grade student each summer. The grant covers a portion of tuition and travel costs for an excursion lasting three to four weeks. The student must select the program he or she wishes to participate in, which must include a rigorous physical challenge. No past outdoor experience is necessary. Essays and applications for summer 2011 are due by Friday, January 21, 2011 to Lee Palmer, Upper School Principal. The program is open to juniors.
