Tuesday - November 16, 2010 From the School This Week's Query How can we respect all religions while practicing our own?Notes from Sally Booklets describing the Minimester trip options were distributed to 7th and 8th graders on Friday. There is a meeting for any parents who are interested in hearing more details on Wednesday night at 7:30 PM in the Drama Studio. Applications are due next Tuesday, November 23rd. All Middle School parents are invited to join us for Meeting for Worship Thursday morning from 8:10 – 8:40 in the Athletic Center. Members of the MS Quaker Life Committee will linger after Meeting for Worship to answer any questions parents may have about Quakerism or Meeting for Worship. The Lost and Found box is getting very full! We will clean it out before winter break. Please take a look when you’re in the building and remind your child to track down lost items! I would like to clarify the policy about use of the school email for students. All middle school students have an email account provided by the school. These accounts should only be used for school business such as communicating with teachers or connecting with other students for school related matters. Students should not be using their Sidwell email accounts for personal use or to send out mass emails. It is important for both network security and storage capacity that these rules be followed. Thank you so much. Thanks so much to everyone who returned their forms and contributions for the Miniwalk for the Homeless! With the forms and the bake sale on Friday, we raised almost $7000 for our partner organizations: Martha’s Table, Bethesda Cares, Transitional Housing, and Samaritan Inns. Great job, everyone! We are still counting Unicef money. If there are any more orange boxes around your house, please send them in by the end of the week. Congratulations to our own Nurse Jasmin Whitfield who has just received her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree from Chicago’s Rush University College of Nursing! Dr. Chivian is the senior editor and author, with Dr. Aaron Bernstein, of Sustaining Life: How Human Health Depends on Biodiversity, published in June 2008 by Oxford University Press. He also runs Pairidaeza Farm, an orchard in central Massachusetts. Please RSVP to DehejiaLecture@sidwell.edu or 202-537-8439 by Friday November 19. We hope to find two families from the Upper School who could each host for the whole second semester, but we welcome interest from families with students in Middle School, and from families who would prefer to host for shorter periods, whether two-three months or just an occasional weekend. Please contact John Flower, Director of Chinese Studies and Global Programs, flowerj@sidwell.edu (202) 537-8181 for more information if your family is interested in hosting one of these students. PA Announcements Venue Change -- PA Arts Committee That Outrageous PA Arts Committee is at it again! All interested are invited. Questions? Please contact Rebecca Boylan at boylanr@georgetown.edu. 8th Grade Hangout The first 8th grade hangout will take place on Friday Nov 19th from 3:30-5pm in the Wannan gym. The first trimester will have just ended, Thanksgiving is around the corner, come and chill with your friends while enjoying pizza and ping-pong! Parents: please come and help chaperone. Send Abby Nolan (Mcganneynolan@aol.com) and Laura Hannah (LHANNAH@washingtoninstitute.org) an email if you can join forces--the last MS hangouts are drawing near so enjoy watching your children socialize!Fruit Flies THERE’S STILL TIME to take part in the “Fruit Flies” citrus sale—and partake of delicious fruit that was on the tree in Florida orchards just hours earlier. Profits from the sale will give a lift to PA-supported student activities at the upper school. Please consider a carton of oranges, grapefruit, or tangelos, as an old-fashioned treat for family, friends, and colleagues. Order online through Friday, November 19th. Fresh-picked fruit will be delivered directly to the Upper School for you to pick up Saturday, December 11th. There’s also a mail option for sending gifts out of town. You may also donate fruit to Martha’s Table or S.O.M.E. Write in your request in the NOTES section of the payment page, and our FRUIT FLY volunteers will deliver your gift directly to the agency.
