Georgia Republican Rep. Tom Price is now a step closer to being confirmed as Health and Human Services secretary after the Senate voted tonight to limit debate on his nomination and move toward a final vote.

The vote fell along party lines, 51-48.

Price, a seven-term congressman and an orthopedic surgeon by trade, has strong backing from Senate Republicans and likely a clear path to joining President Donald Trump's Cabinet. But Senate rules allow Democrats to delay the final vote for up to 30 hours, a tactic that they've utilized for two other Cabinet nominations this week.

If Democrats hold the floor for the full 30 hours, the Senate would take a final vote on Price's HHS nomination early Friday morning.
