The penalties on these Iranian companies, individuals and military organizations could be announced as early as Friday, as the Wall Street Journal’s Jay Solomon reports (https://www.wsj.com/articles/trump-administration-set-to-impose-new-sanctions-on-iran-entities-as-soon-as-friday-1486071696?utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=e7c50c2764-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_02_02&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-e7c50c2764-145367789) . Dive Deeper: See the Washington Institute’s Michael Eisenstadt on “The Role of Missiles in Iran's Military Strategy (http://www.washingtoninstitute.org/policy-analysis/view/the-role-of-missiles-in-irans-military-strategy?utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=e7c50c2764-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_02_02&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-e7c50c2764-145367789) .” ** Mattis in South Korea ------------------------------------------------------------ On his first mission to reassure an important American ally, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis met today with top South Korean officials, who agreed to push ahead with the deployment of a new missile defense system, as the New York Times’ Michael Gordon and Choe Sang-Hun report (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/02/world/asia/james-mattis-us-korea-thaad.html?utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=e7c50c2764-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_02_02&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-e7c50c2764-145367789) . Dive Deeper: Via Australia’s Lowy Institute, “Donald Trump’s Administration: It’s Not As Good As It Looks (https://www.lowyinstitute.org/publications/donald-trumps-administration-its-not-good-it-looks?utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=e7c50c2764-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_02_02&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-e7c50c2764-145367789) .” ** In That Number ------------------------------------------------------------ ** 77% ------------------------------------------------------------ In a survey conducted by Pew Research Center (http://www.pewglobal.org/2017/02/01/what-it-takes-to-truly-be-one-of-us/?utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=e7c50c2764-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_02_02&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-e7c50c2764-145367789) , a median of 77% in Europe said it is “very important” to speak the dominant language to be considered truly a national of that land. ** Critical Quote ------------------------------------------------------------ ** “We are going to see some intense debates as to whether there should be possible diplomacy. In the campaign, Trump himself said he wanted to talk to Kim Jong Un, many people will lean in the direction of continuing the sanctions. If there is going to be any kind of engagement with North Korea, will there be preconditions?” ------------------------------------------------------------ —CSIS’s Bonnie Glaser in today’s Financial Times (https://www.ft.com/content/a220e68e-e900-11e6-893c-082c54a7f539?utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=e7c50c2764-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_02_02&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-e7c50c2764-145367789) . ** Optics ------------------------------------------------------------ (Photo Credit: Mark Wilson/Getty Images.) Steven Stills and his band Manassas fused many styles, country rock was one of them. Elvis, Jerry Lee, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash stand above all in my view when it comes to a certain country rock sound. I also really love the anti-Nashville country rock sound that came out of Bakersfield, California in the mid-to-late 1950s. I’m talking Buck Owens and Merle Haggard. Which brings me to Gram Parsons. Parsons was heavily influenced by the Bakersfield sound. And with The Byrds, Parsons recorded the 1968 masterpiece, “Sweetheart of the Rodeo.” That album, and Parsons’ subsequent work with The Flying Burrito Brothers inspired the Stones experimentation with country rock to mass appeal on “Exile on Main Street” and “Let it Bleed.” Parsons’ musical influence also launched the Alt-Country genre which would surface in the late 1980s-early 1990s beginning with Uncle Tupelo’s album “No Depression.” Wilco and Ryan Adams are the current bearers of the Parsons musical legacy. Parsons himself has a fascinating, yet harrowing story. He overdosed in a Joshua Tree motel room in ’73. But let’s just focus on Parsons music for a minute and smile. Here, in rare footage, watch Parsons sing with his young protégé Emmy Lou Harris (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3b5zCuAI00&utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=e7c50c2764-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_02_02&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-e7c50c2764-145367789) . ** Feedback ------------------------------------------------------------ I always welcome and benefit from your feedback.
