On Monday, students had the chance to meet television chef and cookbook author Pati Jinich, of PBS’s Pati’s Mexican Table. Born and raised in Mexico, Pati began her career as a political analyst here in DC, only to realize that her passion was Mexican cuisine. After training at L’Academie de Cuisine in Gaithersburg, Pati launched her career by developing a culinary program through the Mexican Cultural Institute. Her PBS show and cookbooks have received high accolades. She encouraged students to keep an open mind and pursue their own passions. Her presentation was entertaining, informative, and left everyone craving Mexican food! At Wednesday’s Collection, students had the chance to preview the dance ensemble show, which took place Thursday evening. I hope many of you were able to attend. Student Government also launched the annual Quaker Games, a friendly, schoolwide elimination game that has been a great community-building event for our students. If you aren’t familiar with the Quaker Games, please ask your child to tell you more about it! The annual Black Student Union Show, in which students from all three divisions perform, will take place on Friday, February 10, at 7:00 p.m. in the Caplin Theater. Upper School students will see the full production on Wednesday, February 8. The show, a mixture of dramatic monologues, singing, dancing, and video presentations that addresses the challenges faced by many black young people today, will be followed by a discussion led by Susan Booth, artistic director of the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia, and best-selling author Pearl Cleage. Our students have been rehearsing for weeks in preparation for this show, which promises to be a phenomenal production. I hope to see you there! Warmly, Mamadou Mamadou Guèye Upper School Principal Announcements 2017/18 ACADEMIC CALENDAR There are two ways of navigating to the 2017/18 academic calendar. The direct link is here. You can also go to the 2016/17 calendar and click the link on the right. The 2017/18 calendar includes vacations and parent-teacher conference days. Events including back-to-school nights, morning coffees with administrators, and Parents Association activities will begin to be added to the website calendar in the spring and summer. US VALENTINE'S DAY FACULTY APPRECIATION The US Parents Association is looking for volunteers to help with the annual Valentine's Day Teacher Appreciation Cookie Bake. Volunteers from each grade are needed to bake three dozen cookies each (we will need more than 40 dozen in all!). Contributions should be dropped off in the US Dining Room on Friday, February 10, no later than 7:45 a.m, please. In addition to bakers, we ask that 12 volunteers also meet in the US Dining Room on Friday, February 10, at 7:45 a.m. to package the cookies in festive cellophane wrappings. With several volunteers, we will work efficiently to ensure that each faculty and staff member receives the gift of homemade cookies. Wrapping should take about an hour. To sign up, click here. Questions? Please contact Robyn Alexander at robynalexchef@gmail.com. Events PARENTS OF ASIAN STUDENTS LUNAR NEW YEAR CELEBRATION: TODAY! The first PAS Lunar New Year Celebration at Sidwell Friends will take place today, Sunday, February 5, from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. in the Upper School dining hall. Although Lunar New Year is often referred to as the Chinese New Year, there are other Asian cultures that celebrate this holiday. All are invited to join us in "awakening the lion" and ringing in the Year of the Rooster with crafts, music, delicious dumplings from various parts of Asia, and our very own dumpling-making food station. This is a free event for the entire SFS community, and we hope you and your family will join us to make this special event go "POW" like a firecracker! To help contribute, sign up here. Cheers, PAS Co-Clerks BLACK STUDENT UNION PRODUCTION: FEB. 10 The BSU Black History Month production, an SFS tradition for more than 20 years, will be held on Friday, February 10, at 7:00 p.m. in the Arts Center. It is one of the few campus events that brings together students from PK through 12th grade. The production, written by students, is a mixture of dramatic monologues, singing, dancing, and video presentations that addresses challenges facing black students and other students of color, both on campus and in the United States. The show also celebrates the contributions of historical figures as well as those of SFS's black students. Come listen, learn, and celebrate with our students. Directly following the show, there will be a discussion with special guests Pearl Cleage, a New York Times best-selling author, and Susan Booth, the Jennings Hertz artistic director at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia. These two women have been leaders in the arts and the charge for social justice, and we welcome their talents and time in our effort to support our students and engage our community. PA SPONSORS "HE NAMED ME MALALA": FEB. 12 Join the PA for a screening of the movie He Named Me Malala on Sunday, February 12, at 4:00 p.m. in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room. All are invited to join a discussion after the movie, led by MS and LS parents Ashwhini Tambe and Lynn Taliento. MS and US children are welcome to attend. GAMETIME! BOYS' BASKETBALL: FEB. 14 Come and cheer for our boys' varsity basketball team as they take on league rival Maret on Tuesday, February 14, at 5:30 p.m. in the Athletic Center. Pizza and Valentine's Day sweets will be available for fans. Please let us know if you are bringing a group of students to the game by sending an e-mail to pa.athletics@sidwell.edu. The boys and Coach Singletary are happy to celebrate our future talent! GAMETIME! is our program that features every varsity athletic team once per season. Fans of all ages are encouraged to wear their school colors, raise their voices, and wave their towels and pom-poms in support. 10TH GRADE COMMUNITY SERVICE EVENT: FEB. 25 This year, the 10th grade community service event will be at A Wider Circle on Saturday, February 25. Tenth graders will join students from the Lower School to help sort toys and clothes, restock shelves, make cards for food bags, and provide other support. Parents and siblings are also welcome. We will first meet for pizza in the Upper School Dining Room at noon. A bus will transport volunteers to AWC’s Silver Spring warehouse for a 1:00 p.m. arrival and will return to the Upper School by 3:30 p.m. You may also join the group at AWC, which is located at 9159 Brookville Road #C, Silver Spring, MD. This will be a fun, rewarding, and useful event for the volunteers and AWC beneficiaries! DEAD MAN WALKING: MARCH 3 Dead Man Walking, presented by the Washington National Opera, will be performed at the Kennedy Center on Friday, March 3. Sidwell Friends History Department Chair Steve Steinbach will offer opera insights at 6:30 p.m.; the performance begins at 7:30 p.m. The Washington National Opera has presented the Sidwell Friends community with a special offer: Mention offer number 245112 when ordering Kennedy Center tickets by phone or at the box office to receive 20 percent off select orchestra seats. Click here to order tickets online. Dead Man Walking is inspired by the true story of Sister Helen Prejean, who has devoted her life to ending capital punishment. The opera, by Jake Heggie, focuses on Sister Helen's experiences counseling a convicted murderer on Louisiana's death row, as well as on her interactions with his family and the families of his victims. The emotionally powerful drama raises fundamental—and difficut—questions about justice, suffering, compassion, and redemption. EJC BOOK DISCUSSION: "WE GON' BE ALRIGHT": MARCH 7 The first book discussion of 2017, sponsored by the Parents Association's Equity, Justice, and Community (EJC) Committee, is not to be missed. We will read and assess We Gon' Be Alright: Notes on Race and Resegregation by Jeff Chang. We will meet at the Lower School campus on Tuesday, March 7, at 7:00 p.m. Our conversation, a follow-up to our well-attended fall EJC gathering, will cover a breadth of issues and challenges. Identity is our yearlong theme, and we seek a rich diversity of opinions and experiences on this topic. Other QUAKER QUOTES AND QUESTIONS “To consider mankind otherwise than brethren, to think favors are peculiar to one nation and exclude others, plainly supposes a darkness in the understanding. For as God’s love is universal, so where the mind is sufficiently influenced by it, it begets a likeness of itself and the heart is enlarged towards all men.” —John Woolman (1720–1772), Journal (published in 1774; still in print) Quaker quotes alternate with questions about Quakerism in this newsletter feature. To ask a question about Quaker history or practices, e-mail our Sidwell Friends Quaker Life Committee's authors at quakerquestions@sidwell.edu. LOWER SCHOOL GIVING TREE PROJECT Lower Schoolers are collecting items for the Giving Tree Project. This is an ongoing, collaborative effort to create a community of students that understands that there are people who do not have the things they need—as opposed to all the stuff they may want. Lower School students have worked together across grade levels and classes to generate a list of essential care products. They ask the larger community to help collect these items, which will be distributed in individual bags and given to clients of Bethesda Cares: Toothpaste Toothbrushes Floss Lip balm Mouthwash Bottled water Tissues Q-tips Please send any contributions to the following drop-off spots: LS classrooms, Manor House MS collection box Zartman reception area Mr. Woods's office Ms. Sumka's office Thank you!
