Monthly Newsletter from JVC Northwest with news, updates, resources, & job opportunities. JVC Northwest News JVC Northwest is Hiring! Join our team as the Program and Communications Assistant JVC Northwest is seeking applications for our Program and Communications Assistant. Based at our office in Milwaukie, Ore. (just south of Portland), the Program and Communications Assistant is responsible for supporting the administrative and communication needs of the JVC Northwest Programs, with special attention to the needs of the JV Program, the JVE Program, and JVC Northwest recruitment and marketing efforts. Click here for more information on the application process. #GivingTuesday and Year-End Giving ‘Tis the season of giving, and a special thank you to all those who supported JVC Northwest on #GivingTuesday! Thanks to you, we were able to raise $3,448 from 59 donors. We are so grateful to be a part of a community that is committed to giving back to others. If you still need to check JVC Northwest off your Christmas list for year-end giving, don’t forget to make a tax deductible gift of any size before midnight on December 31! Help us “meet” 60 new potential JVs! Send them the JV Interest Form Do you know someone who might be a great JV? Encourage them to fill out our JV Interest Form- a way for potential applicants to learn more and ask questions. We’re asking for your help meeting 60 more potential applicants by year-end. JVs overwhelmingly share that encouragement from FJVs, family, and mentors is why they apply. Your outreach, your encouragements, and your stories are vital to helping fill positions in the Northwest. Even a simple message saying "Hey, I think you might be interested in this" can go a long way. With this link, please write, text, email, call, tweet, or tag folks today who might be interested in a year of service. Join Our “60 at 60” Bequest Campaign: 60 Gifts for the Future A gift of any size can make a lasting difference To commemorate JVC Northwest’s 60 years of service with those living on the margins of society, we have set a goal to welcome 60 new members to our Legacy Circle. Just as the Jesuit Volunteer experience has left a lasting impact on many of you, you can leave your own legacy by including JVC Northwest in your estate plans. The purpose of the Legacy Circle is to recognize those individuals who have promised to leave a future gift to JVC Northwest after their passing. If you plan to or have already made arrangements to give a gift to JVC Northwest in your estate, please let us know so we may properly thank you. For questions or more information, please contact Anne Douglas, Director of Advancement, at (503) 335-8202 or adouglas@jvcnorthwest.org. Build a Fulfilling Life After Your JV Service: Techniques to Thrive in Career, Community, and Beyond, by Better Understanding Who You Are Today A workshop for Recent FJVs, Sunday January 29th, 7-8:15 pm, St. Joseph’s Parish, Seattle, WA Do you sometimes struggle with how to choose a meaningful career and build a strong community in your post-JV life? Creating your life after being a JV can be “both empowering and frustrating,” as one FJV puts it, but there is a vital step you can take to deepen and streamline your process: stop and take stock of who you are today. This workshop, facilitated by Sara Jones (a former Lutheran Volunteer and Peace Corps Volunteer, and now a professional coach), will help recent FJVs (having served within the last 2-3 years) carve out empowered, self-aware paths for post volunteer life. Light food and drink provided. Click here to get more information or RSVP for this event (space is limited). 60th Anniversary Event in Spokane, WA Friday, February 24, 2017, Herak Club Room, Gonzaga University We're excited to bring our 60th Anniversary celebrations to Spokane, WA! The event will take place on Gonzaga University's campus the evening of Friday, February 24, 2017. The event will begin with a Mass in the Student Chapel (in the Administration Building) and be followed by a social hour and evening program in the Herak Club Room (in the McCarthey Athletic Center). If you live in or near Spokane and are interested in helping in the coordination efforts, please email our Outreach and Events Coordinator, Zach, at outreach@jvcnorthwest.org. Crossroads Call Send in your FJV Update! We are preparing for the Spring 2017 edition of our biannual newsletter, Focus, and we’re asking former JVs to send in their news for Crossroads, the alumni updates section of the newsletter! This info can include weddings, births, adoptions, awards, promotions, milestones, community reunions, etc. Send in your 2-3 sentence blurb about the update, including a picture if possible, to Zach by January 20, 2017. Save the Date: 2017 Seattle Gathering and Fundraiser June 3, 2017, Seattle University Our annual fundraising gathering includes a Mass, social hour, and evening program. This year's event will wrap up our 60th Anniversary celebrations by honoring all Jesuit Volunteers who served at Copper Valley School (CVS) in Alaska. This special place is where our history began and we want to take the opportunity to honor and recognize the men and women who came to serve at (and in some cases build!) Copper Valley School. All from the JVC Northwest community are invited to attend, with a special invitation to those that served at CVS. If you are interested in helping coordinate the event or offering suggestions on how to honor our CVS volunteers, please email Zach at outreach@jvcnorthwest.org. Featured FJV: Agayutem Yui: People of God Bridget Power (Gresham, OR '12-13, Bethel, AK '13-14) This month's Featured FJV is filmmaker Bridget Power (Gresham, OR '12-13, Bethel, AK '13-14) who was moved by the spiritual work of the Yup'ik Catholic people she met while living in Bethel during her time as a Jesuit Volunteer. In this post she explores the process of making a short documentary about the role of women in sustaining spiritual communities in Southwestern Alaska. Click here to read more about her experience making the film. JV Reflects: “Playing With Fire” A JV’s most recent reflection on the ISN Blog In a new blog collaboration with Ignatian Solidarity Network, current JV Christine White (Wenatchee, WA) reflects on St. Ignatius’ inspiring words to “set the world on fire.” For Christine, fire has taken on an interesting metaphor in a part of the Northwest afflicted by wildfire. Read how she feels called to live and act based on these words here. Missed the last post? Tacoma JV Ben Feiten’s post “Held, So I Can Hold” about his time with L’Arche can be found here. JV AmeriCorps Blog: Reflections on World AIDS Day Connor Hayes (Portland, OR) & Anthony Yakely (Anchorage, AK) “The clients I serve have taught me so much about having a positive outlook in difficult times and truly valuing my relationships with those around me…” In honor of World AIDS Day, JV AmeriCorps members Connor Hayes (Portland, OR ’16-17) and Anthony Yakely (Anchorage, AK ’16-17) reflect on their service experience supporting individuals living with HIV/AIDS. Click here to read our December AmeriCorps blog posts. Events, Resources, & Reflections Young Adult Advent Reflection, St. Francis Xavier College Church Monday, December 19th, 6:30-8:30pm, Adult Faith Room of Parish Center at 3628 Lindell Blvd. St. Louis, MO Join the Xavier Young Adults for a light dinner, followed by a reflection and prayer led by Jesuit scholastic Sean Hagerty. The reflection is based on Ignatius’ contemplation on the Trinity looking down on the world. We will examine and pray with the paradoxical nature of the incarnation and God’s love of humanity. RSVP to sfxccyoungadults@gmail.com if you can join, but show up even if you miss RSVPing! Women's Ignatian Retreat Creative Problem Solving through Ignatian Prayer and Discernment January 20-21, 2017, Our Lady of Grace Retreat Center, Manhasset, NY Our complex lives give rise to dilemmas that often have no simple solutions. The prayers and process of decision making offered by St Ignatius of Loyola can guide you to the graces that are always available, but rarely explored. Join facilitator Jean Lynch and other participants for an overnight retreat that will teach you how the Ignatian discernment process can guide you through some of the most confusing and complicated situations, blessing you with God’s wisdom and peace. Click here for more information or to register. Walking in the footsteps of Jesus: A Pilgrimage to the Holy Land May 14-27, 2017 Sponsored by the Loyola Institute for Spirituality, this Pilgrimage to the Holy Land, under the Guidance of Fr. Felix Just, S.J. and Ms. Gail Gresser will take travelers on a journey to discover why the Holy Land is often called the "Living Bible." Getting to know the land where Jesus lived helps participants to understand his teachings more clearly, know and love him more intimately, and follow him more faithfully. This Biblical pilgrimage will explore the land of Jesus with stops in Caesarea, Cana, Nazareth, the Sea of Galilee, Jerusalem, and many other places of Biblical importance. Click here for more information. Magis Program- Application Deadline Approaching East Coast Ignatian Spirituality Program The Magis Program is a structured and creative way for people to engage more deeply in Ignatian spirituality, learn about the Jesuit Mission and Way of Proceeding, and meet other committed lay colleagues on the East Coast. The eighteen-month program consists of four 2-day seminars, one retreat, regular reading, personal reflection and prayer. Magis participants are lay women and men who desire to develop a greater familiarity with the Ignatian and Jesuit charism. The program team and seminar presenters are lay and Jesuit colleagues drawn from a variety of ministries. Click here for more information. After Volunteer Experience (AVE) Reflective program for women transitioning from service and discerning vocation After Volunteer Experience is a re-entry program sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati and an outreach to young adult women who have participated in postgraduate service domestically or internationally. Transition after a year or more of volunteer service can pose significant challenges. AVE provides a reflective space to integrate the volunteer experience and discern future directions in life and ministry. The program includes room, board, and meals for 1-3 months in Southern New Mexico, intentional community with Sisters of Charity, program structure customized to participant's needs, weekly volunteer experience at the US-Mexico border, spiritual direction and overall health counseling, and career planning and development. Click here for more information. Catholic Volunteer Network Discernment Retreats Catholic Volunteer Network (CVN) now hosts discernment retreats for current volunteers and alumni who are contemplating their next steps. Join CVN for a weekend retreat and enjoy the opportunity to get away from the busyness of life and join with others in the spirit of discernment. These retreats are made available free of charge thanks to the support of the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation. Travel stipends are also available. Retreats will take place all across the U.S. in the upcoming months. Click here for more details. JVC Northwest Recommends Below are things being discussed in the JVC Northwest community. Do you have a blog, book, movie, podcast, song, poem, article, etc. you want to share? Email Sarah. The Catholic Volunteer Network's 2016 Advent Reflection Guide is a resource that will help enrich your spiritual journey over these four weeks of Advent. In this Reflection Guide, CVN has assembled prayers, reflections, and service suggestions from several current and former volunteers corresponding to each Sunday’s Gospel. Each week, the guide focuses on some of the four pillars of faith-based service: Community, Social Justice, Simple Living, and Spirituality. Click here to download the guide. Choose your own ADVENT-ure! The JVC Northwest staff has prepared an Advent "tree" for our JV Communities and want to share our "ADVENT-ures" with our FJV Community! In this guide you will find prompts that will allow you to deepen in your own reflection and share activities with your community (both those you live with or your greater community). Cut out the ornaments and hang them around your home as you complete the challenges- or keep it digital as you choose your own "ADVENTure". Click here to download the guide.
