To subscribe, please sign up here (http://bit.ly/ecs1s) . ** Nurturing Jihad ------------------------------------------------------------ New details emerged today about the 19-year-old, one of two assailants who took five hostages Tuesday at the church in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, slitting the throat of the 85-year-old priest, the Rev. Jacques Hamel, before being shot to death by police as the Associated Press reports (http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2016/07/27/world/europe/ap-eu-france-church-attack.html) . And, James McAuley of The Washington Post reports (https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/europe/terrorist-attack-on-french-church-ignites-fears-of-religious-culture-wars/2016/07/27/19b96be8-53f2-11e6-b652-315ae5d4d4dd_story.html) that many in France “see the attack as an exacerbation of a long-brewing culture war over religion in a nominally secular but increasingly divided society.” Dive Deeper: CSIS’s Anthony Cordesman today published a new report, The Uncertain Trends and Metrics of Terrorism in 2016 (https://www.csis.org/analysis/uncertain-trends-and-metrics-terrorism-2016) . And, a recent “CNAS Press Note (http://www.cnas.org/press-note/Counter-ISIS-ministerial-meeting#.V5ku4fkrJQI) ” by Ilan Goldenberg, Paul Scharre and Nicholas Heras discussed the counter-ISIS ministerial meeting of 46 nations last week. ** Shut Down ------------------------------------------------------------ The Turkish government has shut down over 100 media outlets as Mic reports (https://mic.com/articles/149976/the-turkish-government-just-shut-down-over-60-media-outlets#.RWa7iuFfQ) . Dive Deeper: Chatham House’s Fadi Hakura wrote in a commentary last week that “Turkey’s Post-Coup Reverberations Are Just Beginning (https://www.chathamhouse.org/expert/comment/turkey-s-post-coup-reverberations-are-just-beginning) ." And CFR’s Steven A. Cook wrote last week about “How Erdogan Made Turkey Authoritarian Again (http://www.cfr.org/turkey/erdogan-made-turkey-authoritarian-again/p38151) ." ** Cyber Shortage ------------------------------------------------------------ Although the U.S. is in the top tier for educating new cybersecurity workers, the small talent pool is still a significant challenge for industry and government, according to a new survey released today by CSIS as Federal Computer Week reports (https://fcw.com/articles/2016/07/27/cyber-workforce-study.aspx) . Download the CSIS report “Hacking the Skills Shortage: A study of the international shortage in cybersecurity skills (http://www.mcafee.com/us/resources/reports/rp-hacking-skills-shortage.pdf) .” ** Just in Case ------------------------------------------------------------ Donald Trump is “Topic A” for most Americans, the media and many people worldwide. But just in case you can’t find anything about what Donald Trump said about Russian hacking and Hillary Clinton’s emails, The New York Times has pulled together highlights (http://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/28/us/politics/trump-conference-highlights.html) of what he said at a news conference this morning. ** In That Number ------------------------------------------------------------ ** 1.71 billion ------------------------------------------------------------ Number of monthly active Facebook users. Source: Yahoo! Finance. (http://finance.yahoo.com/news/facebook-q2-earnings-fb-2016-000000949.html) ** Critical Quote ------------------------------------------------------------ ** “It is a mistake to see these acts as manifestations of coordinated political ambition rather than scattered episodes of mental illness.” ------------------------------------------------------------ — CSIS’s Jon B. Alterman on “Suicide and Heroism.” Source: CSIS Middle East Notes and Comment (https://www.csis.org/analysis/middle-east-notes-and-comment-suicide-and-heroism) . ** One to Watch ------------------------------------------------------------ Bob Schieffer (@bobschieffer (https://twitter.com/bobschieffer) ) is covering his 25th political convention this week at the DNC. And join the Foreign Policy Research Institute at 4:30 p.m. for a National Defense Forum on “Politics and the Military (http://www.fpri.org/event/2016/07/national-defense-forum-politics-military/) .” ** CSIS On Demand ------------------------------------------------------------ Watch the CCIPS-CSIS Cybercrime Symposium (https://www.csis.org/events/ccips-csis-cybercrime-symposium-2016) featuring assistant U.S. attorney general Leslie Caldwell. ** Sounds ------------------------------------------------------------ This week, the National Defense Week podcast (http://www.nationaldefenseweek.com/podcasts/) covers upcoming reforms at the Pentagon. ** I Like It Like That ------------------------------------------------------------ Apple today announced that it has sold its billionth iPhone (http://www.theverge.com/2016/7/27/12302542/apple-billion-iphones-sold) . That’s good because we record a lot of podcasts at CSIS. ** Smiles ------------------------------------------------------------ Radiohead is back in America. They are one of the biggest bands in the world and can easily kick off a sell-out US tour at Madison Square Garden, as they did last night in New York. Rolling Stone Magazine critic Rob Sheffield said the show was exhilarating. They certainly didn’t disappoint their fans by playing a set list full of their best material, including this clip of “15 Step (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kt-nZMt4pEU&feature=youtu.be) ,” a song featured on the soundtrack of the blockbuster 2008 film “Twilight.” ** Feedback ------------------------------------------------------------ I always welcome and benefit from your feedback.
