BIG NIGHT - "Trump claims the prize," by POLITICO's Shane Goldmacher: "Exactly 350 days after Donald Trump stood in Quicken Loans Arena at the first presidential debate and refused to endorse the eventual Republican nominee, he accepted that same Republican Party's nomination - and vowed to keep winning all the way to the White House. In the biggest address of his unlikely, divisive and meteoric political career, Trump sought to bring together a party that he helped fracture in an ugly primary that left divisions that were apparent all the way through a tumultuous four days in Cleveland. The Manhattan mogul sold himself as the champion of a downtrodden working class - 'America's blue-collar
billionaire' as one speaker had called him earlier in the evening - promising to restore 'law and order' and casting himself as a change agent against presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ce83b1a2cfd0b4672a43e4f1b0ffeaa19bf91145335f797bec4368349e78f4c1

- "Republican source leaks Trump speech to Dems," by POLITICO's Kenneth P. Vogel in Cleveland: "A super PAC backing Hillary Clinton on Thursday night mysteriously obtained and leaked drafts of Donald Trump's nomination speech - and those of several other convention speakers - hours before the night's proceedings were set to kick off, sending the Trump campaign scrambling on the final night of what has been a chaotic convention. The super PAC, Correct the Record, obtained a document containing the drafts from "a Republican source who had access to it and they sent it to us," said Correct the Record founder David Brock, a close Clinton ally. ... The Trump campaign did not respond to a
question about how the draft might have leaked. But a senior Republican operative working behind the scenes at the convention called the leak 'a disaster' that proved that Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his team 'just aren't ready for prime time.'" http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ce83b1a2cfd0b467115928cce557af362a54fc3a62522529234798b2fd207ce1

- "Ivanka Trump pitches father as champion of women," by POLITICO's Katy O'Donnell: Donald Trump is "gender neutral" and the best candidate for women, Ivanka Trump argued Thursday night in a speech to the Republican National Convention. Ivanka argued women should focus on her father's hiring history over his impolitic remarks, offering her own experience as an assurance that he will treat women well. 'Politicians talk about wage equality, but my father has made it a practice at his company throughout his entire career,' she said. 'He will fight for equal pay for equal work, and I will fight for this right alongside of him.'" http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ce83b1a2cfd0b467f7787d0655c61651e8801905aadf15d683d3cd79f4b31f84

FIRST IN SCORE - Strickland makes fall TV reservations: Democrat Ted Strickland is reserving $8 million worth of fall TV, radio and digital ads in the Ohio Senate race, according to the campaign - his first television and radio buys of the cycle. The ads will begin airing after Labor Day and continue through the election. While Strickland hasn't been on TV in Ohio yet, allies have spent heavily on the former governor's behalf: Senate Majority PAC has spent more than $6 million running ads in the state so far, and labor unions have run ads as well. GOP Sen. Rob Portman, meanwhile, has already run several positive spots, starting this past June, about his work to prevent and mitigate opioid
abuse.

AIR SUPPORT - "ESAFund and Club for Growth pour money, ads into Tuesday GA-03 runoff," by Campaign Pro's Elena Schneider: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=54effe9d00604d9eef3c4da35c08a096d69bcbce4a0f9053ac801d0feed3142f

ARIZONA AMBIVALENCE - "Convention delegates show lukewarm support for McCain re-election," by Cronkite News' Sophia Kunthara in Cleveland: "When Arizona delegates to the Republican National Convention were asked Thursday how many would not vote for Sen. John McCain in next month's primary, more than half of their hands went up. The question stunned veteran pollster Frank Luntz, who had asked it as part of a presentation on the last day of the convention on the challenges facing the party - one of which was party unity. 'Oh my God," Luntz said. ... Luntz pressed the issue, getting silence when he asked the crowd if it would support Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick, D-Flagstaff, over McCain. The
delegates said they would support McCain if he was elected as the state's Republican nominee next month." Polls have shown McCain leading his chief primary rival, former state Sen. Kelli Ward, by double digits. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ce83b1a2cfd0b4674ca735931f4a71a5089b22ec3522e918e59d14a80c781f2a

THINGS POLL APART - Poll: Portman 37, Strickland 33: GOP Sen. Rob Portman has a slim lead over Democratic opponent Ted Strickland, 37 percent to 33 percent, in the latest Ohio Senate poll conducted by Suffolk University. A large share (23 percent) of the poll respondents said they were undecided in the race. Thirty-two percent viewed Strickland favorably and 42 percent viewed him unfavorably, while Portman was viewed favorably by 33 percent of respondents and unfavorably by 30 percent. Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump tied at 44 percent in the head-to-head presidential section of the poll. Clinton and Trump supporters were equally likely to be undecided in the Senate race. Suffolk polled
500 likely Ohio voters from July 18-20. The margin of error is plus or minus 4.4 percentage points.

CASH HUSTLE - PRE-PRIMARY FEC REPORTS - Huelskamp outspends Marshall ahead of KS-01 primary: GOP Rep. Tim Huelskamp of Kansas outspent his Republican primary opponent, Roger Marshall, in early July, shelling out nearly $280,000 to Marshall's $226,000. Huelskamp also outraised Marshall, bringing in about $48,000 between July 1 and July 13 to Marshall's $25,000, according to FEC filings. Huelskamp had $394,000 in cash on hand at the close of the period, while Marshall had less than $43,000. Huelskamp is facing a strong challenge from Marshall, who's criticized Huelskamp for getting kicked off the House Agriculture Committee and has the backing of agriculture interests. The primary is Aug. 2.

- Shkreli raises $100,000 in first week in MI-08 race: Democrat Suzanna Shkreli raised more than $100,000 in her first eight days of her races against GOP Rep. Mike Bishop of Michigan, according to her FEC filing. But she'll need a lot more to catch up to Bishop, who raised only $4,570 in the July 1 to July 13 reporting period but has about $837,000 in cash on hand. Democrats recruited Shkreli, a Macomb County prosecutor, to challenge Bishop for his suburban Detroit seat after their previous candidate dropped out.

- Jayapal outraises, outspends opponents ahead of WA-07: State Sen. Pramila Jayapal outraised and outspent her opponents ahead of the Democratic primary to fill retiring Rep. Jim McDermott's seat in Seattle, according to FEC filings. Jayapal raised $88,000 and spent $273,000 between July 1 and July 13, giving her $369,000 in cash on hand ahead of the Aug. 2 primary. State Rep. Brady Walkinshaw raised $41,000 and spent $193,000, giving him $314,000 in cash on hand. And King County Council Chairman Joe McDermott (no relation to the congressman) raised $10,000 and spent $115,000, giving him $127,000 in cash on hand. The district is safely Democratic.

- Bergman outspends GOP primary opponents in MI-01: Retired Lt. Gen. Jack Bergman dramatically outspent his opponents ahead of the Republican primary to replace retiring GOP Rep. Dan Benishek of Michigan, shelling out $215,000 between July 1 and July 13. Bergman - who loaned his campaign $270,000 earlier this year - raised less than $10,000 and had $37,000 in cash on hand. State Sen. Tom Casperson raised $10,000 and spent $33,000 in the period, giving him $114,000 in cash on hand. Former state Sen. Jason Allen raised $27,000 and spent $45,000, giving him $190,000 in cash on hand. Democrat Lon Johnson, meanwhile, raised $15,000 and spent $82,000, giving him $178,000 in cash on hand.
Johnson's primary opponent, Jerry Cannon, did not appear to have filed a pre-primary report. The primary for the northern Michigan seat is Aug. 2.

HOUSE SPOTLIGHT - The nation's most competitive congressional race is playing out in a placid slice of the Philadelphia suburbs. The latest installment of POLITICO Magazine's "What Works" series explores how in Pennsylvania's 8th District, one of the most competitive congressional races in the nation, deciding a winner will come down to what voters think of the man at the top of the GOP ticket. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=54effe9d00604d9e69fe29124797c0776c7e8fe2424d151936c7805840e1791e

PRESIDENTIAL SPEED READ - "Trump's four dysfunctional days in Cleveland," by POLITICO's Eli Stokols in Cleveland: "Donald Trump was only nine hours from accepting the nomination of the Republican Party when he walked into a private lunch with 300 donors and ridiculed the GOP. He could have beaten any of his competitors even as an independent, he said. His vanquished rivals were insignificant and their withheld endorsements are meaningless, Trump contended. ... It was a stunning penultimate chapter to a national party convention that was already high on dysfunction." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=54effe9d00604d9e850153bdf7754f1ad3bc1b784efe2dc290a7b34a39045530

- "Trump rewrites GOP foreign policy," by POLITICO's Michael Crowley: "Twelve years after George W. Bush dedicated much of his 2004 Republican nomination acceptance speech to the cause of 'advanc[ing] liberty in the broader Middle East,' Donald Trump ripped into Hillary Clinton for for advocating a 'failed policy of nation building and regime change ... in Iraq, Libya, Egypt and Syria.' Trump's words underscored a sudden and dramatic shift in direction for a Republican Party once proudly associated with military intervention and democracy promotion in the Arab world." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=54effe9d00604d9e84fefb480639254a70fa380c1fbdc9a4f3466447790af541

- "GOP insiders: Trump nailed it," by POLITICO's Steven Shepard: "Donald Trump's acceptance speech hit the mark Thursday night, drawing accolades from a number of GOP political insiders who doubted his competence to lead the Republican ticket this fall. That's according to The POLITICO Caucus - a panel of operatives, activists and strategists in 11 battleground states surveyed immediately following Trump's speech. Fifty-six percent of Republican insiders said Trump's speech - a forceful indictment of those responsible for what he perceives as a country in decline, along with an assurance that he is uniquely qualified to solve the nation's ills - made them feel more confident in his
candidacy." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=54effe9d00604d9ef05018809031affebf5ee3bdb2b1ad35eb0de3a9eb69e6f9
