Dear Hunter, The last week has been a tough one for our country – indeed, this has been a difficult year, and I have found myself turning to my dad’s speeches and letters for insights and advice. Dad spoke a lot about inequality and injustice and about how the two are so directly related to violence. Almost 50 years ago to the day, he delivered a speech to the National Bar Association in Detroit. The following quote struck a chord: His words ring just as true in 2016 as they did in 1966. I hope that 50 years from now, Americans look back and see this time as a pivotal one, one that led to healing and, ultimately, to greater justice, opportunity, dignity and respect for all. Of course, the next president of the United States has an important role to play, and over the past year, Save the Children Action Network (SCAN) has worked to ensure that investing in children is a top priority for the next administration. Ensuring that all children survive and thrive in their first five years of life helps level the playing field – providing the fair chance to succeed that we believe is a fundamental human right. We will continue our campaign over the next two weeks, as Republicans and Democrats gather in Cleveland and Philadelphia to officially nominate their party’s candidate. Thanks to the support of Johnson & Johnson, SCAN will have a team on the ground to educate convention-goers about our priorities. The centerpiece of our involvement will be an interactive installation, featuring a virtual reality video and an interactive app about our work at home and around the world. We also will host a series of events in each city with prominent champions for kids, including sponsoring PBS NewsHour policy forums on early education on July 20 in Cleveland and July 26 in Philadelphia. In an effort to prioritize children’s issues into the Democratic and Republican Party platforms, our team has engaged with representatives from each of the presumed nominee’s campaigns and party’s platform committees and proposed draft language on early education and ending preventable deaths. We hope to see strong language in both party platforms, which will ultimately be approved by party delegates at their conventions. If you happen to be in Cleveland or Philadelphia during the conventions, I’d love for you to stop by our installation. Please just let me know when you will be there and I will make sure you have all the details. Last but not least, I wanted to make sure you saw my recent interview in The Washington Post (https://t.e2ma.net/click/lckn6/h9ytd/9anzgn) magazine about SCAN’s mission to invest in kids. As always, I welcome any thoughts or questions you might have. Many thanks for your support.
