07/26/2016 07:51 AM EDT By Heather Caygle (hcaygle@politico.com or @heatherscope) WHAT TO WATCH FOR TODAY-We're headed into the second day of the Democratic convention and party leaders, no doubt, are hoping Sen. Bernie Sanders' speech Monday night quelled most of the anger and frustration coming from his wing of the party (more on that below). Tonight is when delegates officially nominate Hillary Clinton, a chance for disgruntled Sanders supporters to either fall in line or raise a huge stink. Former President Bill Clinton will also speak. ROCKY ROAD ON DAY ONE- While Democratic leaders were trying their darndest to paint the picture of party unity on Monday, things were rocky from the very beginning. Outgoing DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz was booed off the stage to shouts of "Shame!" from Bernie Sanders supporters at a breakfast for Florida delegates (http://politi.co/2aawtjp) and the mood only deteriorated from there. Sanders voters shouted down convention speakers throughout the rest of the day- no one was safe, not even Rep. Elijah Cummings-- even after a personal plea from the Vermont senator himself for party unity. BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER- Things seemed to calm down by the time Sanders took the stage at the end of the night, his appearance coming after a string of speeches from Sens. Cory Booker, Elizabeth Warren and first lady Michelle Obama and a sleepy performance from Paul Simon. "'Hillary Clinton must become the next president of the United States,' Sanders boomed. And delegates, for the most part, cheered his call," reports Kyle Cheney. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=b992a8cb04cdb69588898e3efa79ba15718eb7cb7e284aa2b9bfc6e7908fdbe5 But: Even Sanders' speech may not be enough to deliver Democrats the "drama-free convention" they've been promising for weeks. "[A]fter Sanders's speech, it was clear that a significant portion of Sanders's backers would never come around, no matter how forcefully he endorsed Clinton. A group of about 50 Sanders supporters gathered in the halls of the Wells Fargo center chanting: 'A vote for Hillary is a vote for Trump.' A man gallivanted through the halls screaming: 'This party is dead!'" reports the Politico team. This quote: "I don't really believe in my heart he truly supports her. I feel like he's giving us subliminal messages, 'Vote for Jill Stein. Vote for Jill Stein.' That's the wave I'm picking up," said Jelisa Mone, a 27-year-old from Charlotte, NC, who was selling $20 T-shirts depicting scowling Clinton and Trump faces and a '#BadVsWorse' hashtag. Alan Grayson's ex-wife repeatedly went to police with accusations of domestic abuse over a two-decade period, according to documents she has provided to POLITICO, revelations that come as the Florida congressman enters the final weeks of his Democratic primary campaign for Senate," report Bres, Marc Caputo and Jake Sherman. "The congressman, who also asserted Lolita Grayson battered him in 2014, vehemently denies he engaged in any abuse during their 25-year marriage, which ended last year in a bitter annulment that she is now appealing." You're reading POLITICO's Huddle, your play-by-play guide to all things Capitol Hill. Morning read: We're really enjoying the New York Time's interview with retiring Rep. Charlie Rangel, chock-full of classic quips from the veteran Democrat. For example, his thoughts on the DNC scandal: "They made up this thing about what's-her-name Schultz, just to make it exciting." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=4b8bc98dc79262f2a8c61063e80dcd0b8c840b5d16c384629990214997587091 TODAY IN CONGRESS - The ghost of John Quincy Adams floating around Statuary Hall. AROUND THE HILL-- Probably a lot of people singing this: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=4b8bc98dc79262f26b71bccf03c9affea5339a37a0aae3f3111e2e3e21cab900 ** A message from Anthem: The status quo in health care is unacceptable and unsustainable. That's why Anthem is challenging the DOJ's flawed decision to block our acquisition of Cigna, a combination that will transform health care by expanding access to affordable, high quality health coverage for consumers. For important information, please visit AnthemInc.com ** STAY TUNED-- Art Halvorson, the GOP primary candidate who barely lost to Rep. Bill Shuster earlier this year only to win the Democratic nomination as a write-in candidate has a big announcement coming next week, he told Huddle. Halvorson was officially offered the Democratic nomination in June but hadn't made a decision to accept or not, at least until now. Post-convention announcement: The former Coast Guard captain has promised that if he does run, he plans on serving as a Republican in Congress even if he's elected as a Democrat. "I'm going to wait one more week. I have to wait until all these conventions are over and get things settled down," he said. "I will be making it very clear what the answer is." JUST CALL ME BARISTA-- Sen. John Thune made a stop in the Sioux Falls Starbucks Monday to show folks he's more than just a legislator--he can also make a mean latte. The Senate's No. 3 GOP leader, clad in a red-checked shirt and khakis, even donned the traditional green Starbucks apron. Maybe he'll take his talents to Cups on the Senate side when Congress returns. It's not going to happen." - Ian McKenna (@Ian_McK): Susan Sarandon is having literally the worst time at the #DemConvention Don't miss the gif: pic.twitter.com/Ola9Hi3y5o - Tamara Keith (@tamarakeithNPR): "Can I just say to the #bernieorbust people, you're being ridiculous," says Sarah Silverman amidst "Bernie" chants. POTTY MOUTH (AND AN APOLOGY)-Democratic Senate candidate Katie McGinty got a little loose lipped describing her opponent Sen. Pat Toomey on Monday, calling him an a-hole before walking it back and apologizing later in the day. The Republican response? "We would refer @KatieMcGintyPA to her campaign chairman @GovEdRendell, who called Pat Toomey 'a man of uncommon decency.' Apology accepted," tweeted the Toomey campaign. But turns out some of the vitriol has been misdirected at a California man with a similar Twitter handle after NPR tweeted his username on accident. Roll Call: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=4b8bc98dc79262f268a9ca3fe6f0dc16e9628c3b8bbe28da7a5aa8d07f7704d8 TED STRICKLAND'S BAD DAY-Take it away Cincinnati Enquirer: "The Ohio Conference of Teamsters union endorsed Republican Sen. Rob Portman over former Gov. Ted Strickland, a Democrat who had won its support in previous elections. The union, which represents more than 50,000 members across Ohio and nearly always supports Democrats, had endorsed Strickland in 2006 and 2010." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=4b8bc98dc79262f2a69283ee2a30cd2483122565de8e21888be5ae9eb3bf541c WARREN NOTE-- "She was the toughest teacher on campus but the wait-list for her class was a mile long," said Rep. Joe Kennedy, introducing Sen. Elizabeth Warren Monday night, and recounting the one and only time he showed up unprepared to her class during law school, only to be mercilessly grilled in front of the other students. FEELING GOOD-Democrats on Capitol Hill are feeling more confident than ever about their party's chances heading into November, according to the latest Roll Call survey. "In the June survey, 9 in 10 Democratic aides were bullish about their chances of winning the Senate majority, where they need to pick up four seats if Clinton wins or five seats otherwise. In the House, where they need 30 seats to retake the majority, 8 in 10 predicted a Democratic wave." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=4b8bc98dc79262f21f948166906e15b44e8875824410476d44eab0d9a3cde576 MONDAY'S TRIVIA WINNER - Jeremy Berkowitz was the first to guess that 1968 was the last time two governors (or former governors) were both selected as presidential running mates. TODAY'S TRIVIA - Jeremy brings us today's question (and it's a toughie): Two people in the 20th century had the privilege of being nominated on their party's ticket twice, while at the same time, those conventions happening in their respective home states. Who were these two individuals, what years were they nominated to be on the tickets at the conventions taking place in their home state, and in what cities did those conventions take place? The first person to correctly answer this three-part question will get a mention in tomorrow's Huddle. E-mail: hcaygle@politico.com. That's why the Anthem-Cigna combination matters. Anthem's acquisition of Cigna will advance affordability, returning an additional $2 billion in health care savings to self-insured customers each year. The combination will also allow Anthem to expand our participation in the health insurance exchanges to nine additional states, even as other companies leave this volatile market. And Anthem will advance quality by further partnering with physicians and hospitals to improve patient outcomes and satisfaction. The flawed DOJ decision is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of the dynamic, competitive, highly regulated health care landscape and preserves a suboptimal market for health care coverage when Americans need and deserve better. Anthem is fully committed to expanding access to affordable, high-quality care and defending the benefits of this acquisition on behalf of consumers.
