To subscribe, please send me an email at aschwartz@csis.org (mailto:aschwartz@csis.org) Note: The Evening CSIS will be gone fishin’ on Friday, July 15, and will return on Monday, July 18. Have a great weekend and smile… ** Closer Coordination ------------------------------------------------------------ Secretary of State John Kerry held talks on Thursday with Russian president Vladimir Putin on a controversial U.S. proposal to coordinate with Moscow on military operations in Syria, in exchange for grounding Syria’s air force, as the Wall Street Journal’s Felicia Schwartz reports (http://on.wsj.com/29Sux1l) . ** Unhappy Anniversary ------------------------------------------------------------ The New York Times’ David Sanger reports (http://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/14/world/middleeast/iran-nuclear-deal.html?hpw&rref=world&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&module=well-region®ion=bottom-well&WT.nav=bottom-well) that on the one-year anniversary of the US-Iran nuclear deal, very little about the Washington-Tehran relationship outside the strict parameters of the 130-page Iran agreement has improved. Dive Deeper: CSIS's Proliferation Prevention Program released a series of essays today that encompass each stakeholders’ perspective on the deal, “JCPOA: One Year Later (https://www.csis.org/programs/international-security-program/proliferation-prevention-program/iran/jcpoa-one-year-later) .” And Brookings today published an excellent commentary, “The Iran Deal, One Year Out (http://www.brookings.edu/blogs/markaz/posts/2016/07/14-iran-deal-anniversary-experts) ,” by Strobe Talbot, Bob Einhorn, Suzanne Maloney, Bruce Reidel, and others. ** South China Sea Reality ------------------------------------------------------------ In the aftermath of Tuesday’s South China Sea ruling, which China has said it plans to ignore, a post-celebration hangover has set in among Filipinos, as the New York Times’ Floyd Whaley reports (http://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/15/world/asia/philippines-south-china-sea.html?_r=0) . Dive Deeper: CSIS’s Bonnie Glaser today posted a new ChinaPower Podcast: “When a Rock Is Just a Rock: Breaking Down the UN Ruling.” Bonnie’s conversation is with Peter Dutton, director of the China Maritime Studies Institute at the US Naval War College. It’s easy listening on Soundcloud (https://soundcloud.com/csis-57169780/dutton ) . Plus, Chatham House’s Bill Hayton today authored a new commentary: “Will there now be peace in the South China Sea? (https://www.chathamhouse.org/expert/comment/will-there-now-be-peace-south-china-sea) ” ** Integrated Air and Missile Defense ------------------------------------------------------------ As Defense One reported this morning, America’s allies in Europe need integrated air and missiles defenses “tailored to deter and defeat low-tier Russian threats while enhancing strategic stability,” quoting a new report by CSIS’s Thomas Karako. Part of the problem, he writes, is the current Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) network “does not deter Russia.” Karako’s new report is available for download (https://www.csis.org/analysis/looking-east-european-air-and-missile-defense-after-warsaw) . ** In That Number ------------------------------------------------------------ ** 2.14 million ------------------------------------------------------------ The number of people that moved to Germany last year, a 46% increase from 2014. Source: Reuters (http://www.reuters.com/article/us-europe-migrants-germany-idUSKCN0ZU1ZD ) . ** Critical Quote ------------------------------------------------------------ ** “The organizations, relationships, intelligence, and capabilities that once supported a robust antisubmarine warfare network in the North Atlantic and Baltic Sea no longer exist.” ------------------------------------------------------------ —CSIS’s Kathleen Hicks, Lisa Sawyer Samp, and Andrew Metrick in their latest report, Undersea Warfare in Northern Europe (https://www.csis.org/analysis/undersea-warfare-northern-europe-abbreviated-version) . ** One to Watch ------------------------------------------------------------ (Photo Credit: Brad Barket/Getty Images for Time Inc.) Alan Murray, editor of Fortune, will succeed Norman Pearlstine as Time Inc.’s chief content officer. All Time Inc. US editors will report to Murray. ** Optics ------------------------------------------------------------ This week, Politico's Playbook creator Mike Allen turned over his innovative morning dispatch to a new group of authors including his longtime collaborator, Daniel Lippman. Our new podcast features an interview Bob Schieffer and I recorded yesterday with Daniel Lippman. We discussed the Playbook transition, the groundbreaking newsletter’s evolution, plans for the future, and provides a window inside the juggernaut that is Politico on the eve of the 2016 Republican National Convention. You can listen on SoundCloud (http://cs.is/29WgPau) or iTunes (https://itun.es/us/VYgadb.c) . ** Highly Recommended ------------------------------------------------------------ “This satellite image of construction in the South China Sea shows why Beijing won’t back down without a fight (http://www.businessinsider.com/satellite-image-south-china-sea-2016-7) ,” by Business Insider’s Amanda Macias. ** CSIS Today ------------------------------------------------------------ CSIS’s Energy and National Security Program hosted “The Future of Capacity Markets (https://www.csis.org/events/future-capacity-markets) .” ** CSIS Tomorrow ------------------------------------------------------------ Join CSIS’s Project on Prosperity and Development at 12:30 p.m. for “The Influence of Small States on Superpowers (https://www.csis.org/events/influence-small-states-superpowers-ambassador-bernal) ” with former Jamaican ambassador Richard Bernal. ** This Town Tomorrow ------------------------------------------------------------ Join the Wilson Center tomorrow at 9:00 a.m., for “Colombia: Post-Accord Challenges (https://www.wilsoncenter.org/event/colombia-post-accord-challenges) ,” featuring Rafael Pardo, Colombia’s minister of labor. And join the Middle East Institute at 12:00 p.m. for “After Fallujah: Security, Governance, and the Next Battle Against ISIS (http://www.mei.edu/events/after-fallujah-security-governance-and-next-battle-against-isis) .” ** CSIS On Demand ------------------------------------------------------------ Watch “Continuity and Innovation in Russia’s Way of War (https://www.csis.org/events/continuity-and-innovation-russias-way-war) ” hosted by CSIS’s Russia and Eurasia Program in May. ** Sounds ------------------------------------------------------------ Listen to the latest episode of FT’s World Weekly with Gideon Rachman, “Italy’s struggling banks pose a test for Renzi and the EU (http://podcast.ft.com/s/world-weekly-with-gideon-rachman/) .” ** I Like It Like That ------------------------------------------------------------ The New York Times’ latest interactive story, “Our Boat Was Intercepted by China (http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/07/10/world/asia/south-china-sea-scarborough-shoal-philippines-hague.html) .” Like it. ** Smiles ------------------------------------------------------------ “There's no need for argument/There's no argument at all…” All discussion of Irish rock begins and ends with Van Morrison. Sometimes I think all discussion of rock and roll begins and ends with Van Morrison. But Van “don’t want to discuss it.” He rarely grants interviews. Scarcity can be a beautiful thing. I think some great artists just “don’t want to discuss it.” And there really is no need for argument. I did love the interview last summer when Van told the Irish Times’s Fintan O’Toole that “Being famous is not great for the creative process.” I can’t imagine that anyone would argue with Van at all, because there is no argument with music that makes you smile like this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F60F4L07oMY ) (By the way, that’s Elvin Bishop in the blue cowboy shirt on guitar—as Charlie Daniels said, “He ain’t good lookin’ but he sho’ can play.”) ** Feedback ------------------------------------------------------------ I always welcome and benefit from your feedback.
