Hunter- With Hillary Clinton just making her VP pick, below is our profile of Senator Tim Kaine's foreign policy record, covering his long-standing leadership of American global engagement - and his championing of diplomacy and international development. Given his strong foreign policy experience, we'll be watching the official launch tomorrow and of course all the activities at the Democratic convention. More from Philly. Liz Liz Schrayer, USGLC BREAKING GLOBAL GAB: Clinton's VP foreign policy profile July 22, 2016 With deep foreign policy and national security credentials, Senator Tim Kaine has been a champion for American global leadership throughout his public service career. As a member of the Senate Foreign Relations, Armed Services, and Budget Committees, Kaine has stressed the importance of "strengthen[ing] our nation's leadership abroad" to ensure that U.S. foreign policy advances our nation's security and economic interests. http://action.usglc.org/site/R?i=aDZ0BbpY6IImz488bsgxyw A vocal supporter of development and diplomacy and a 2014 USGLC Tribute Dinner honoree, Kaine has argued that "America's strength in the world is best expressed when we balance military strength, economic strength, diplomatic strength, and strength of our moral example." http://action.usglc.org/site/R?i=5TvOFPD-Wcixs2qph3U3jg During his time at Harvard Law School, Kaine took a seminal year off to work with Jesuit missionaries in Honduras, teaching carpentry and welding. He described this transformative experience saying, "We have a moral obligation to help our neighbors. But fighting extreme poverty and preventable disease aren't just moral issues, they're economic issues as well." As Ranking Member on the State Department and USAID Management Subcommittee of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Kaine has been an ardent defender of our nation's diplomats and global development programs. He has worked in Congress to ensure "our diplomats have the tools, resources, and security they need to carry out their work, often in challenging environments, in support of the American people and promotion of our nation's core values." http://action.usglc.org/site/R?i=slbpluWraF4ITKMhKgXArw Kaine has consistently voted to protect international affairs programs, opposing an amendment that would have cut funding by 50%. The Senator has described development programs as "one of the best tools we have in grappling with a very unstable world, and it embodies all the best values of Americans... while also creating jobs here at home." http://action.usglc.org/site/R?i=BSKWb9OP8e8fOPrWGsIoIA The Senator has urged for more effective efforts in countering violent extremism by allowing greater flexibility for the Department of Defense to work with USAID on joint projects in order to achieve our national security objectives. In addition, Kaine led an effort to pass the Syrian Humanitarian Resolution calling for a robust strategy and greater humanitarian aid for refugees fleeing the civil war. He has traveled extensively throughout the world and speaks fluent Spanish. DID YOU KNOW? * Kaine was elected to the Senate in 2012 after serving as Chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 2009 to 2011. * He served as Governor of Virginia from 2006 to 2010 when he led trade missions to Israel, Japan, and Morocco.
