Thanks to everyone who participated and attended Alumni Winter Weekend, what a fun and spirited tradition! Even though it’s technically not winter yet, the Winter season at Upland is in full swing with hockey, snow disruptions and the holiday season upon us. > > Our morning assembly last Monday before the Thanksgiving break was vintage Upland, and I thought I’d share a little about it with you. The assembly began with a very moving 9th grade speech given by Lilly Secundy about the special relationship she has with her younger brother Oliver who is autistic. Part of Lilly’s message was how her brother has helped her to be a more caring and selfless person. I pointed out that those who are caring and selfless tend to be very generous, and so this transitioned nicely into our special presentation of the designation of Trustee Emeritus to Anne Moran for her many contributions to Upland during her time as a parent (Lizzy ’03, Caroline ’05 and Emily ’09)and Trustee (1999-2009). She gracefully shared a few words about how special Upland has been to her family. Finally, when closing the assembly with our customary request for announcements (which usually means reminders or recaps of sports games or activities), Kindergartener Alex Brant raised her hand, stood up, took the microphone and in front of the entire school proceeded to tell us why Thanksgiving was special to her. As a Native American, she said, she is reminded how the holiday represents the spirit of helping and sharing. (Though admittedly she said it in a much more effective and cuter way.) > > Witnessing those values we prize at Upland embodied by one of our youngest students, one of our oldest students, and one of our parent/Trustee/friends - all in one setting - was a wonderful moment. Have a great weekend, and safe travels to our girls’ and boys’ teams heading up to storm the ice in Connecticut this weekend! > > Best, > > > 9th Grader Lilly Secundy > > > > > Kindergartener Alex Brant sharing her thoughts on Thanksgiving > > > > > > Dan Hickey, Anne Moran, Mary Pat Fralick, and Bill Wylie > Honoring Anne as Trustee Emeritus > > > > > Elizabeth Hershey-Ross, Arlene Ross, & Upland Legend Court Dunn > Before the puck drop at the first ever Ernie "Ink" Ross Legends of Hockey game > Alumni Winter Weekend 2018 > > > > > > Annie Osborn, Assistant Athletic Director > > Our varsity teams are in Connecticut this weekend! Below are answers to possible questions you might have. > > What is the standardized test? > The CTP (Comprehensive Testing Program) is a standardized test used by independent schools and high-achieving suburban public schools. The CTP is managed through the Educational Records Bureau (ERB). This series of multiple-choice tests includes reasoning and achievement assessments. > > Why do our students take the CTP (ERB’s)? > Administering these tests yield several benefits. The results provide the school with information about our program. When trends become visible, the faculty can adjust and bolster various parts of our curriculum accordingly. The results also indicate how well our students have mastered some of the basic skills that are fundamental to success in school and how they handle higher-order thinking. Finally, the testing process gives our students an experience in dealing with a multiple choice format which helps prepare them for the SSAT type of test they will take in their future. > > What is the testing schedule over the next two weeks? > There will be one subtest per day during a morning class period. Students will have a maximum of two tests per day including regular class tests. > > What happens if a student is absent? > We will schedule a make-up test if a student is absent. However, we do ask that appointments and absences be avoided during these two weeks. > > What should a student do to prepare for these tests? > There is no need to study or prepare for these tests, yet we would like our students to be as focused as possible. Please encourage your child to get a good night's rest as well as a good breakfast. > > When will results be shared with parents? > Parents will receive a report during the spring parent-teacher conference. > > Any other thoughts? > Students rarely perform up to their maximum capability on any one sitting. For this reason, we administer the tests every year. > Various factors can affect student performance on these tests, including how s/he feels that day, how rested s/he is, and the attitude with which the student takes the test. > These tests provide just one snapshot of a student’s educational experience. To obtain a more detailed picture of ability and achievement, we look at the student’s academic performance in the classroom. > While the taking standardized tests are an important experience, the results should be viewed as a measure not themeasure of your child. > Should you have any additional questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. > > > > Mary Richards, Head of Lower School > > A recurrent message in many students' recent progress reports had to do with the need to memorize math facts. Try as we might, committing to memory that 3+7=10 or 8x7=56 is not always a fun process or one that kids are excited to do. Many of you have asked for suggestions on how to help your child at home. Not surprisingly, flash cards aren't so 'flashy' anymore. > > Last year, Fourth Grade teacher, Pam Kopanski, was awarded a grant to use with her class for the Reflex Math program. It is a computer-based program that uses games to increase automaticity of math facts. Most students who regularly used the program showed a significant improvement in their math fact fluency. Moreover, many of the students actually liked doing it! > > The Fourth Graders will again have access to the program this year, thanks to the grant. The company also gives parents the opportunity to purchase an individual license. Especially for families in Grades 1, 2 and 3, I thought this might be of interest to you. Upland does not receive any incentive from Reflex to promote their site. I pass this info on to you only because I think it could benefit our students. > > If you are interested, please visit reflexmath.com <http://uplandcds.myschoolapp.com/podium/push/Log.aspx?s=585&snd=001f35ce-b78a-4abe-b73f-3c1bd6d2b057&url=http%3a%2f%2freflexmath.com%2f&lbl=reflexmath.com> and click on "Purchase" on the top bar. This will give you the option to choose Home User License. Again, current 4th Grade students should not purchase a home license as they are already enrolled and can use the program at home. > > The teachers and I would love to receive feedback from those of you who try the program. It's our hope that having home and school work together will make a difference in the children's learning. > > > UPA Co-Chairs: Andrea Puskar, Nancy Wood, Melissa Bodnar, Ashley Daliessio > > > > > Let's Go Upland! > Can you out merch the Marketing Director? The sale introduced a few new ideas last year and will continue to add different elements each year. The goal is to create an atmosphere of kid made, adult-friendly products that students can purchase for their relatives. The IDEA Center is the workshop and each grade designs their own gift bags and takes the lead in designing, building, constructing a particular type of gift that is sold during the event. As we move in the direction of student-made gifts, the event will be supplemented with purchased or volunteer made gifts. The benefits to this approach include - increased student ownership, careful and 'purchase ready' construction and design (in contrast to the normal, messier prototyping process), and budget/entrepreneurial skills (older students) all while strengthening the 'maker mindset.' > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Kim Murphy, Director of Development > > > > > The Annual Fund > The Annual Fund helps to bridge the gap between tuition revenue and the school's every day operating expenses. This is an annual event in recognition of Admiral Grace Murray Hopper (1906-1992), a pioneer in computer technology. Among many more important achievements, Admiral Hopper coined the term “bug” to refer to computer failures when a moth infiltrated Mark I, a large automatic calculator that was a precursor to electronic computers! The Hour of Code campaign has grown out of this annual event, and involves hour long activities to expose students to coding to help them recognize that computer science is creative and fun! > > At Upland, we continue to find ways to bring coding into our curriculum. In recent years, Lower School students have used Scratch to create math games, illustrate scenes from a book, and other activities. The students have also worked with LEGO Robotics. Recently, Mr. Gallagher and I have begun an Upper School coding activity inspired by the national organization, Girls Who Code. The students are using Code.org <http://code.org/> to learn, and explore coding at their own pace. We would like to offer this platform as an independent, at home option to any interested student.
