Announced during the COP 23 climate conference, BEIS’s initial contribution of nearly US$240 million makes this program the largest IDB-UK effort in the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region. Each partner will initially contribute US$1 million, expecting to channel more than US$10 million over the next three years to innovative solutions and knowledge exchange. The partners actively co-financed projects throughout the year, allowing the IDB to leverage US$270 million in loans from the French Development Agency (AFD) for water and sanitation, energy transition, and environmental management. AFD also helped to create the single-donor French Climate Fund for LAC, which will focus on fighting climate change and building resilience in the region. PepsiCo and the IDB Team Up to Empower Leaders and Improve Water Resource Management The IDB, PepsiCo, and the PepsiCo Foundation expanded their collaboration as part as their “From Source to Home” program through the creation of the Hydro-BID Support Center, which will help LAC countries develop their capacity to plan for and manage changes in water availability. Backed by a US$3 million grant from the PepsiCo Foundation, the Center will build upon the results obtained from applying Hydro-BID under the auspices of the AquaFund, an IDB- multi-donor fund supported by PepsiCo Foundation and the Governments of Austria, Spain, and Switzerland. Formerly known as the Inter-American Investment Corporation, the decision to rebrand follows the IDB Group’s expanding private sector focus. Following a partnership agreement signed with the Real Madrid Foundation in June, this school is the second in Costa Rica and will help to reach a total of 225 children. Strong Partnership with European Commission Leverages EUR 64.3 Million in 2017 A EUR 8 million grant from the European Commission (EC) was approved earlier this Fall for the Energy Management and Efficiency Program, complementing an IDB loan of US$15 million and a loan of US$15 million from the Japan International Cooperation Agency aimed at improving energy efficiency in government facilities and promote fuel conservation in Jamaica. These funds are part of the EUR 64.3 million in grants leveraged by the IDB through its strong partnership with the EC this year. Key Partners Solidify their Support of the Colombia Sostenible Multi-donor Fund The first round of funding for the Colombia Sostenible Multi-donor Fund - http://cts.vresp.com/c/?TheInterAmericanDeve/ef08ddbd69/60edebaf74/107f923ebe has been secured, thanks to the Fund’s new partners the Governments of Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland. The partners will help the IDB to continue building up a pipeline of projects to systematically address rural development, climate change, environmental sustainability, and social inequality in areas characterized by armed conflict. Giving Smallholder Farmers a Hand with the Global Agriculture and Food Security Program Through its renewed partnership with the IDB, the Global Agriculture and Food Security Program (GAFSP) committed US$10 million to finance the Agricultural and Agroforestry Technological Innovation Program. Complementing a US$55 million IDB grant, GAFSP’s support will help to boost agricultural income and food security for smallholder farmers in selected areas of Haiti. Airbnb and the IDB Join Forces in LAC Seeking to promote sustainable development, Airbnb and the IDB formalized a new partnership that will study the impact of home sharing in the region, exchanging Airbnb data and information on travel trends across LAC. Specifically, the partnership intends to promote sustainable tourism and the digital economy, while exploring applications of the shared economy that can benefit communities. A partnership agreement signed this December has formalized ties between Conservation International and the IDB. The partners will seek to work in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Panama, Suriname, and other countries in topics related to biodiversity, climate change, coastal restoration, infrastructure and energy, knowledge and learning, among others. The IDB joined forces with Junior Achievement Americas (of which Delta Airlines is also a partner) and SAP to launch EmpleaTECH, a partnership that will foster innovation and the inclusion of youth in the labor market. Announced at the Council of the Americas Symposium and 23rd Bravo Business Awards in Miami, the partners will begin working in the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, and Guatemala, using an initial contribution of US$3 million to train 2,400 young people over the next three years. Revitalizing a Historic Partnership with Italy The IDB Group and the Government of Italy have revitalized their historic partnership. In addition, the Italian government committed US$5 million to the Sustainable Energy Facility for the Eastern Caribbean, which seeks to reduce the dependency of countries on imported fossil fuels through energy efficiency and renewable energy. Switzerland and the IDB Reaffirm their Commitment to a Safer LAC A partnership agreement signed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and the IDB has reaffirmed the partners’ longstanding commitment to citizen security. Channeling a Swiss commitment of CHF10 million to the region, the partnership will use technical assistance and knowledge exchange to improve citizen security, justice, and violence prevention programs in Honduras. Teaming Up with the World Economic Forum to Capitalize on the Fourth Industrial Revolution The IDB has expanded ties with the World Economic Forum (WEF) by formalizing its membership in WEF’s Center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution in San Francisco. The partners seek to co-design and pilot policy frameworks to maximize the benefits and address the challenges brought about by the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The partners have pledged to work together, through a US$500,000 grant, on an effort to fill information gaps regarding the impact of public policy on tobacco consumption. FONTAGRO Identifies Innovative Solutions to Build Climate Resilience and Adaptation in LAC FONTAGRO, an IDB-managed cooperation mechanism that promotes innovation in agriculture, reviewed 2010 proposals and selected four winning projects following its 2017 Call for Proposals. FONTAGRO will provide US$1.2 million in funding and project proponents will invest more than $3.44 million as matching funds. This year FONTAGRO also elected a new Executive Secretary, Dr. Eugenia Saini. The principles, first published in 2013, have been enhanced with more detailed guidelines. A US$150 million IDB loan will be complemented by an additional US$70 million from the Japan International Cooperation Agency through the Co-financing for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CORE) Program. Organized with the Alas Foundation led by the renowned singer Shakira, the last award was presented by FEMSA Foundation, a key IDB partner in this topic. The Summit, one of the largest of its kind in the region, attracted more than 2,400 participants from China and LAC to explore opportunities related to China’s Belt and Road Initiative, with a focus on renewable energy, transport, and agribusiness, the latter of which is of particular importance in Uruguay. IDB Highlights Corporate Sustainability and Rebranded Private Sector Arm The IDB again joined forces with Council of the Americas to coordinate the Council of the Americas Symposium and the 23rd Bravo Business Awards. IDB leaders joined more than 400 CEOs and high-level decision makers from governments and NGOs for this annual discussion of the key issues transforming the Americas. At the event, the IDB presented its IndexAmericas initiative, discussing the importance of corporate sustainability in the region, and unveiled its rebranded private sector arm IDB Invest. High-Level Mission to Tokyo Further Solidifies the IDB-Japan Relationship Earlier this Fall President Luis Alberto Moreno of the IDB Group traveled to Tokyo, strengthening ties with the Government of Japan by participating in meetings with Japan’s Deputy Prime Minister, business leaders, academic leaders, government officials, and the heads of key IDB partners the Japan International Cooperation Agency and the Japan Bank for International Cooperation. Annual Donor Meeting in Frankfurt Provides Updates on the US$47 Million SECCI Fund The 2017 Sustainable Energy and Climate Change Fund (SECCI) Donor Meeting was hosted in Frankfurt this November by IDB partner KfW Development Bank. Partners Austria, Finland, Germany, Japan, the Nordic Development Fund, Spain, and Switzerland gathered to discuss the Fund’s progress and to define priorities for 2018. An important focus of the meeting was the evolution of SECCI in the context of the IDB’s renewed mandate for climate change and its role as a catalyst for private sector climate action. Recruiting Top Talent in Asia With an eye to creating a diverse workforce and expanding ties with its Asian member countries, the IDB Group traveled to China and Japan this fall to promote career opportunities. In China, the IDB visited top institutions including Fudan University, Peking University, Tsinghua University, the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing, and the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, with which the IDB has a strong partnership. In Japan, career seminars were held at the University of Tokyo, the University of Keio, Waseda University, and Sophia University, with whom the IDB has an ongoing partnership as well. FONTAGRO Contributes to National Inventories on Greenhouse Gases FONTAGRO’s lead researchers presented five of the 77 papers featured at the III Conference on Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG) in Animal Production Systems of Latin America. Held in Montevideo, the specialists provided an overview of Latin American GHG projects co-financed by FONTAGRO and highlighted how they are effectively reducing GHGs in Central America, Colombia, Uruguay, and beyond. In this setting, a partnership agreement was formalized with Korea Development Institute to pave the way for further cooperation on public-private partnerships, while another agreement reaffirmed the IDB-Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements relationship. With Chinese Partners, Promoting Trade Across the Pacific In Beijing, the IDB and the People’s Bank of China (PBC) co-organized the “Routes to Growth in a New Trade World” seminar. Antoni Estevadeordal, Manager of the IDB’s Integration Sector, discussed trends in global development, LAC’s response to the global macroeconomic situation, and the new trade environment to organizations including IDB partners the PBC, the China-LAC Industrial Cooperation Investment Fund, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, as well as the China-LAC Cooperation Fund. Boosting Commercial Opportunities at LAC Flavors Argentina In Buenos Aires this November more than 560 food exporting companies from LAC met with 120 international buyers from five continents at LAC Flavors 2017, where they closed transactions valued at US$152 million. This ninth edition of LAC Flavors was organized by the IDB in partnership with the Argentine Investment and Trade Promotion Agency, the Ministry of Agribusiness of Argentina, and the ExponenciAR Group (ClarÍn and La NaciÓn), in addition to 24 other export promotion agencies.
