And then she came down with a pesky cold. So the second lady did the next best thing — she dialed into the event. Speaking to active-duty troops, veterans and military families, Biden — whose son Beau served in Iraq — thanked everyone for their service and said she was sorry she couldn't be there in person, an aide tells POLITICO. "In fact, I wouldn't want to give any of you this cold!" she said on the call. Even though Biden couldn't attend the event, she sent some staffers to work on the landscaping and painting of two homes at the Habitat site, an aide said.
