Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said Wednesday there's nothing inappropriate about FBI officials on special counsel Robert Mueller's team holding political opinions so long as it doesn't affect their work.

"It's our responsibility to make sure those opinions do not influence their actions," said Rosenstein, who oversees Mueller's criminal probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election. He was responding to questions about text messages released by the Justice Department Tuesday in which two officials who previously served on Mueller's team showed disapproval for President Donald Trump.

"I'm not aware of any impropriety," Rosenstein said. "I'm not aware of any violation of those rules by the special counsel."
