Information regarding PSAT Scores

Dear Juniors and Parents,
If you sat for the PSAT in October, you should receive an email this week from the College Board instructing you on how to access your online scores. The testing booklet for the PSAT exam you completed in October was placed in the mail by our office this past Friday.  If you provided the College Board with an email address (on your answer sheet) during the registration process then you will be notified via email when the scores are posted on line. The College Board will post your score report online sometime this week and the email from the College Board will instruct you how to access your scores when they become available.
In the meantime, all students will need to have established a personal account on the College Board to view the score when they become available. If you do not have a College Board account, you can register at http://www.collegboard.org/ . This will serve as your College Board account when you register for the SAT in the future - so remember your username and password.
As you review your PSAT scores, please remember that these results will not be part of your admissions file at the colleges to which you choose to apply. These scores assure neither success nor failure in any admissions process at any school; they simply give you a starting point for understanding your probable results on future standardized tests. Try not to focus too much on your scores but instead look to understand your areas of strengths and areas for growth. The PSAT score report, in conjunction with your test book, will help you identify how you performed on a variety of questions. Look for patterns. Did you tend to miss questions at the end of the section? Did you miss only math questions dealing with geometry? Analyzing your performance in this way will be far more informative than focusing on the numbers at the top of the report.
At the beginning of the second semester, we will begin individual meetings with juniors, and will assist in the development of a comprehensive, personalized testing plan, with each of you based on these scores as well as your performance on previous testing. (i.e. last Spring’s practice ACT).
In addition, we wish to remind you of the Student and Parent Meeting on Thursday, January 11, 2018 at 7 pm in the RLS Meeting Room. The week of January 15, 2018 all juniors will receive their college counselor assignment and the time of their first one on one meeting.
Once you have emerged from the final push of tests and papers in the next several weeks, you may want to spend some time with the practice tests available online for the SAT and the ACT. You can access practice tests at www.collegeboard.com ; www.actstudent.org ; or www.academicapproach.com . If you take advantage of the sample tests on the Academic Approach site, you will also be able to compare your score to the results of the practice ACT you completed last spring, and you can also link directly to the other features of this program. Please share any information you have regarding any practice scores from these or other resources and we can then discuss this further at your first college counseling meeting. Generally, we advise juniors to take their first SAT or ACT in the winter/early spring.
Finally we urge you to take a deep breath, keep this information in its proper perspective, and take time to celebrate all that you do, not just how you performed on a particular standardized test.
