To Parents of Carneal 6 Math –

November greetings! Here’s a quick update:

Two weeks ago we completed our brief unit on solid figures with the “Polyhedron Project” - the students created a polyhedron and then calculated its surface area. They turned out wonderfully and are hanging in the classroom now.

We focused a bit on area and how to find the formulas for rectangles, triangles, trapezoids, and parallelograms. We’ll return to area before we delve into volume later in the year.

We have started progressing through our orange problem-solving book, trying to do about 5 problems a week. The students are taking to the Singapore method of drawing models to solve just about any problem. This method helps students to visualize and to break down just about any problem. It has served us well in our exploration of ratio and proportion, our current unit. Next week, we’ll have a quiz and then introduce the scale model project – a fun 6th grade tradition. We’ll have our ratios test before Thanksgiving Break.

As for laptop use, I have begun to incorporate it into our routine a bit more, using it for classroom activities and allowing students to do their work in One Note if they choose. However, many inform me that they prefer having a pencil and paper to complete their work.

A homework reminder: students should be spending about 15-30 minutes on math each night, including weekends. If students are wanting extra challenge, there are several options all posted on my moodle page. At the very bottom, there is an algebra extra credit and I will post a solid figures and ratio extra credit soon.

Have a great rest of the week. And feel free to be in touch.

Sincerely,

AB Carneal

202-537-8429
