The Trump administration today said it would seek to remove the decades-old ban on oil and gas drilling in the waters off the East and West coasts as well as off Florida's coasts.

The proposal by the Interior Department for a new five-year drilling plan is the latest move by President Donald Trump to remove restrictions that he has said wrongly prevented energy companies from tapping into U.S. resources.

The move is sure to draw sharp opposition from both Democrats and Republicans, particularly in Florida, who have long opposed opening many of the offshore areas to the drilling rigs they say pose a threat to the tourism industry that is vital to their coastal economies.
