R.Hunter: In the darkness of night - at roughly 2:00 a.m. last Saturday - Republicans forced through their tax bill on a party-line vote. Not one Democrat had a say in shaping it, almost no one voting on it had time to read it and, in the end, not one Democrat voted for it. The end result of the Republicans' closed-door efforts is a bill that blows up the deficit, discriminates against millions of middle-class families and strips millions more of their health care - all so corporations and the ultra-wealthy can add to their already overflowing coffers. It did not have to be this way. For weeks before that 2 a.m. vote, I pushed and pushed my Republican colleagues to put aside partisan differences and work across the aisle to actually try to better the lives of the American people. Those efforts were worthwhile, but fruitless. Now, the most vulnerable Delawareans will be hurt because of that unwillingness to compromise. Medicare and Social Security are likely to be gutted as a result of that refusal to work together. To me, that's unacceptable. I believe that we've made not just a mistake of fiscal policy, but in this unilateral process, we've failed in our most fundamental call to hear each other, to work together and to be mindful that we do not cause harm to those in our society who look to us to make the future brighter and to open the doors of opportunity wider. It is my sincere and deepest hope that going forward, both sides can find ways to come together for the sake of all those we're fortunate enough to serve.
