Tuesday - November 23, 2010 From the School This Week's Query How can I help friends in need if they don’t realize they need help?Notes from Sally Application forms for Minimester trips are due today. Please remember that trip assistance is available for these programs for anyone who needs it. School will close for the Thanksgiving holiday at the end of the day today. Aftercare will be in session today, but the 5/6 Math Club will not meet. Also – a reminder that next Friday, December 3, is a work day for Middle School faculty and there is no school for Middle School only. Our next service initiative is the school-wide holiday gift drive. We have tried to offer a variety of choices in collaboration with long-time partner organizations, and we encourage you to involve your children in this effort. Look for details elsewhere in this letter about ways to help those in our community who are needy this winter! Parents of 8th and 6th graders: Your “Conversations with Jack” are coming up. 8th grade parents will meet with him next Tuesday, November 30th, and the 6th grade program is the following Tuesday, December 7th. Both begin in the Dining Room at 7:45 AM. Twenty one 6th, 7th and 8th graders participated in the first math meet of the year at St. Albans. 6th graders Amal Mattoo and Alex Pierson, 7th graders David Hauge, Giri Srinivasan, and Sammy Singer, and 8th graders Gigi Stark, Laura Anderson, Lauren Berkman, Mikal Nathani, and Shanthi Thillairajah were all top scorers. Sidwell Friends tied for 2nd place as a team out of the 12 independent schools that participated. The next math meet will be held at St. Patrick’s on February 1st, 2011. The Middle School had a frequent special visitor last week: a beautiful red-tailed hawk! See pictures and read about our visitor on the Wildlife Sightings Page of the website: www.sidwell.edu/wildlife-sightings/index.aspx Our best wishes to you all for a bountiful Thanksgiving!Instrumental Music Notes 7/8 Orchestra – FULL ORCHESTRA – Monday- December 6th –3:30-5:30 Arts Center TheatreALERTNOW Emergency Messaging Test We will run a test of our new ALERTNOW emergency messaging system, which will replace Equake, on Friday, December 3.
