This is all part of their game. Build up the other side, create inevitability, then create an underdog/comeback story that is compelling and drives ratings/readers. They have already written the script for the next two years - they are just waiting for the characters to play their roles and then they'll build them up. The GOP realized this and knew the media needed a protagonist in 2009 and created the tea party to fill that role. The danger is if the protagonist in this case becomes a challenger from the left against Obama. The media would eat that up and give that person an outsized importance.
