<span style="font-family: "calibri","sans-serif";">Dear Families,

<span style="font-family: "calibri","sans-serif";">I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. You could not have asked for nicer weather on Saturday!

<span style="font-family: "calibri","sans-serif";">I wanted to check in with all of you about the Social Studies program this year. As you may already know, this year’s Social Studies curriculum covers Geography. Students will spend a good amount of time mapping the physical features of the world and exploring various cultures, including their own. In addition to Geography, we will also cover current events and Global Issues such as water availability, poverty, and over population, just to name a few. Washington, DC is an amazing resource in and of itself for enriching the curriculum.

<span style="font-family: "calibri","sans-serif";">I would like to extend an invitation to all of you. If you are interested in sharing about your family’s culture, your travels, or interests, we would love to host you as a guest speaker! In the past I have had families come in to talk about their religion and other aspects of their cultural, cook traditional dishes, and share about their careers (one mother worked for the BBC which tied in beautifully with our coverage of current events). One year I also had a family generously arranged to have a guest speaker from Malaria No More do an activity with the class. These were all fun, rewarding opportunities for the class and a neat way to open up the sixth grade experience to families.

<span style="font-family: "calibri","sans-serif";">I know that it is not always easy to come in during the school day; however, if you are able and interested in coming in, please let me know. In the past, I have occasionally been able to schedule after school presentations to accommodate families' busy schedules or if you’d like to send in material I would be happy to try to tie it into my lessons. I am also always on the lookout for interesting fieldtrips that relate to our studies. If you have any suggestions I would welcome them.

<span style="font-family: "calibri","sans-serif";">It has been a pleasure getting to know your children and I look forward to meeting all of you soon!

Take care,

Lauren Phillips
