The Evening CSIS will be “gone fishin’” until after the first of the new year. We wish everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and a Happy New Year. We’ll see you in 2017! ** Confirmation ------------------------------------------------------------ In wake of the release of CSIS’s Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative’s satellite images, the New York Times’ Chris Buckley reports (http://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/15/world/asia/china-spratly-islands.html?ref=world&_r=0&utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=67417d01af-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2016_12_15&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-67417d01af-145367789) that the Chinese government appeared to confirm today that it had begun placing antiaircraft guns and other defenses on the disputed Spratly Islands in the South China Sea, despite earlier promises that it would not militarize the islands. Dive Deeper: CSIS’s Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative (AMTI) has all of the photos and analysis featured on its interactive micro-website (https://amti.csis.org/chinas-new-spratly-island-defenses/?utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=67417d01af-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2016_12_15&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-67417d01af-145367789) . ** Evacuation ------------------------------------------------------------ Late this afternoon, the BBC reports (http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-38329461?utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=67417d01af-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2016_12_15&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-67417d01af-145367789) that more than 3,000 people have been evacuated in buses and ambulances from a besieged rebel-held enclave in the Syrian city of Aleppo, officials say. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) says the full evacuation of civilians and rebels is likely to take several days. Dive Deeper: See the Washington Institute’s “Aleppo is Falling (http://www.washingtoninstitute.org/policy-analysis/view/aleppo-is-falling?utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=67417d01af-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2016_12_15&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-67417d01af-145367789) .” ** Surge ------------------------------------------------------------ The US dollar surged to its highest level in 14 years today, battering emerging-market currencies and pushing the euro closer to parity after the Federal Reserve signaled that it expects to raise interest rates quicker than previously anticipated, as the Wall Street Journal reports (http://www.wsj.com/articles/dollar-surges-as-u-s-prepares-for-higher-rates-1481803627?utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=67417d01af-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2016_12_15&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-67417d01af-145367789) . ** In That Number ------------------------------------------------------------ ** $75 billion ------------------------------------------------------------ The record amount of money that the World Bank announced it has raised to help end extreme poverty through the International Development Association (IDA)—for the first time blending donor contributions with internal resources and funds raised through debt markets. The business community has been the main ballast and if we lose that it will have a major impact.” ------------------------------------------------------------ —CSIS’s Matthew P. Goodman on US-China relations. Take as Directed is a new podcast from the CSIS Global Health Policy Center featuring some of the leading voices in global health. ** I Like It Like That ------------------------------------------------------------ Harvard’s Nieman Lab reports (http://www.niemanlab.org/2016/12/clamping-down-on-viral-fake-news-facebook-partners-with-sites-like-snopes-and-adds-new-user-reporting/?utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=67417d01af-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2016_12_15&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-67417d01af-145367789) that Facebook is clamping down on viral fake news. ** Smiles ------------------------------------------------------------ If you read this space regularly you know I have been writing a lot about iconic movies and their soundtracks. There are some songs that are forever linked to the movies they were featured in. Martin Scorsese films make especially good use of music. In Scorsese’s 1973 film “Mean Streets,” Robert De Niro’s famous barroom entrance to the Stones’ “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” is unforgettable. Or in his 2006 Academy Award winning “The Departed” when Jack Nicholson and his crew speed up the highway with vengeance to the Dropkick Murphy’s “Shipping up to Boston.” The one that I love best though is from Scorsese’s 1986 film “The Color of Money” starring Paul Newman and Tom Cruise. I miss Paul Newman. In “Color of Money” Newman plays “Fast Eddie” Felson, a legendary pool hustler. Newman is actually reprising his role from the 1959 film “The Hustler.” Of course both movies are based on the books of Walter Tevis. Newman won an Academy Award for his portrayal of Fast Eddie. I will never get over Newman’s deeply soulful performance in this film. And I think I have Eric Clapton to thank for that along with Newman. Clapton’s “It’s In The Way That You Use It” provides the film’s heartbeat. You can see why in the MTV music video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0XQwazkx10&utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=67417d01af-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2016_12_15&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-67417d01af-145367789) and smile like I do when thinking about Paul Newman and Fast Eddie. ** Feedback ------------------------------------------------------------ I always welcome and benefit from your feedback.
