Tuesday - September 7, 2010 From the School LETTER FROM SALLY Welcome back, everyone! This week’s query: What does respect mean at Sidwell Friends and how is it shown in our school? Why are honesty, truthfulness, and respect for others important in our Quaker school community? How do I model respect in my daily actions in middle school? This week’s assembly is Lesole’s Dance Project, featuring Gumboot, Zulu, and street dances from South Africa. Middle School parents are always welcome to join us for our assemblies, which take place in the arts center theater on Friday afternoons from 2:30 – 3:15. The School has received the occupancy permit for the new Athletic Center! Students will be getting a tour of the facility today and sports activities will begin later this week. Students will get more information during their PE class today. I hope that you all were able to view the summer announcements and letters from the principals and from Tom Farquhar; they were posted on the website this year instead of being sent out by mail. Please look for them on the Parent Portal; the link is on the front page of the portal. A reminder to sixth grade parents that students will be walking to Peirce Mill for their grade-level trip tomorrow. If you have not yet signed the permission slip, we will need that for each student. Looking for volunteers! Do you enjoy gardening? We would love to have several parents to work with our 5th and 6th grade “Green Gardeners.” The time period for gardening is Wednesday afternoons between 2:30 and 3:15. If you can help, please contact me! Instrumental Music Notes Instrumental Music Notes Welcome back! Auditions for the Middle School Concert Band and String Ensemble for grades 5-8 take place Wednesday (tomorrow), September 8th, during the rehearsal periods. Students are asked to play a scale, sight read a short excerpt, and then play something prepared. Drummers are asked to accompany Mr. Henderson on a 12-bar blues progression. All instruments are encouraged to apply. Advanced Choral Group Auditions AUDITIONS FOR 7/8 ADVANCED CHORAL GROUPS will take place on Wednesday, September 8th from 12:50 to 1:55pm AND Thursday, September 9th from 3:30-5:00pm. There are two advanced choral groups in the middle school. They are open to any 7th or 8th grader who enjoys singing with others in an accelerated setting. Both of these groups perform in the winter and spring concerts. In addition, this year, each group will be performing in multiple settings around the immediate area. These include: the National Cathedral, the Landon School Choral Festival, the Washington Women’s Chorus Invitational Concert, the Thomas Circle Singers Holiday Concert, and the Washington Home. GIRLS ENSEMBLE: This group rehearses every Thursday morning from 7:25(sharp) to 7:55am and every other Wednesday afternoon from 12:55 to 1:50 (rehearsal period). Some Wednesday afterschool rehearsals will be called as we get closer to performance engagements. BOYS ENSEMBLE: This group rehearses every Wednesday morning from 7:25(sharp) to 7:55am and every other Wednesday afternoon from 12:55 to 1:50 (rehearsal period). Some Thursday afterschool rehearsals will be called as we get closer to performance dates. Interested students are asked to bring a short prepared song to the audition. Results will be posted on Friday, September 10th. All rehearsals will begin the week of September 13th. Please contact Ms. Holtz (holtzc@sidwell.edu) for questions or concerns.Fall Drama Auditions Vertical Voices Fact SheetAudition Fact SheetAttention Students in Grades 7/8! Other News Events for Student Scholarships Events for Student Scholarships NEXT-TO-NEW SALE Sidwell’s hugely popular sale of quality used items is back and we need your help to make this event more successful than ever! The Next-to-New Sale will be held October 21-23 and is part of the Events for Student Scholarships program that raises money for financial aid. All proceeds directly benefit student financial aid. If you have questions about the sale, please contact the Events for Student Scholarships office at (202) 537-8110 or email events@sidwell.edu. We need your donations! Collection times at the Wisconsin Avenue campus will run September 8 to October 13 on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:00 – 10:00 a.m. and Saturdays from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. We will also have a limited number of collection days at the lower school—look for updates in the newsletter. Please click here for a list of items we accept and do not accept. We need volunteers! There are volunteer jobs for everyone at this event! Both men and women are needed for weekday and weekend shifts. You can spend as much time helping as you would like—even a few hours is a huge help! We are looking for volunteers to assist with collecting, sorting and pricing donations, setting-up for the sale, cashiering, cleaning-up, publicizing the event, community out-reach, etc. We are also looking for “Section Heads” to take responsibility for a particular category of donations and oversee its organization. If you are interested in learning more about these positions, please contact Lauren Mulcahy, Director of Special Events at mulcahyL@sidwell.edu or at 202-537-8110. This is a great way to meet members of the SFS community! Friends and extended family are also welcome to get involved. The Parents Association newsletters are a forum for communication among parents and provide announcements concerning School or PA events or information related to a School or PA event.
