Sounds As Syria’s wars continue, NPR’s Ari Shapiro [ http://www.npr.org/2016/02/18/467253387/aid-convoy-finally-reaches-5-besieged-areas-of-syria ] speaks with Red Cross representatives on the aid convoys in the country, which have now gained access to five cities that were previously under siege. I Like It Like That Eye-catching things in CSIS's orbit NPR’s genius host of “All Song’s Considered” and “Tiny Desk Concerts,” Bob Boilen, is going to be [ http://n.pr/1UaX4gG ] on The Simpsons as himself. Really. Smiles “I’d like to rest, my heavy head tonight on a bed, of California stars.” Woody Guthrie wrote that lyric. And, as we discussed in this space last week, Wilco put Woody’s lyrics to music Woody never got to make before his untimely death in 1967. “California Stars” is worth revisiting. I can’t stop listening to it. When you listen to a song like this over and over it does something to your soul that is undeniable. For me it’s all about Americana. It’s about Woody, Bob Dylan and Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy—troubadours who have so captured the soaring American spirit in song. Did you know that Dylan visited Woody, who was suffering from Huntington’s disease at the Greystone Park Psychiatric hospital in New Jersey before Guthrie died? Guthrie gave Dylan a card after their first meeting that said “I ain’t dead yet.” Guthrie’s autobiography “Bound for Glory,” inspired a young Robert Zimmerman to become Bob Dylan. “I been travelin’ around the country, followin’ in Woody Guthrie’s footsteps,” Dylan said upon arrival in Greenwich Village where he would soon become famous beyond comprehension. Tweedy wants to be Dylan, just like Dylan wanted to be Woody. And in an effortless fashion, Tweedy is the dang closest thing there is in American music to the Bard. One day, I’m going to write a novel based on American visions of Woody, Dylan and Tweedy. There, I said it. Alert the media, and my agent! So let’s revisit an early Wilco performance of “California Stars,” [ http://bit.ly/1UaEGEN ] from 1998, the year they recorded it. The late Jay Bennett is on guitar, Leroy Bach on keys, John Stirratt on bass and Ken Coomer on drums. None of those guys are now with Tweedy and the current iteration of Wilco except Stirratt. I loved Jay Bennett, and used to talk to him on the phone every so often. He was an American original himself and an outstanding musician. Here’s to Jay, Jeff, Woody and to “California Stars.” Feedback I always welcome and benefit from your feedback. Please drop me a line at aschwartz@csis.org. Need help finding us?
