Our students are conducting background research; collecting and analyzing data; and presenting their results in a written report with graphs and a digital presentation. From how to conduct background research in Social Studies to revising reports in Language Arts, students are also applying skills learned in non-STEM classes to their individual experiment. Delving into fields such as social science, biology, chemistry, space science, and physics, the top 18 students will be asked to participate in San Miguel\u2019s first ever STEM Night. These budding scientists will present their displays on March 17. RSVP torsvp@sanmigueldc.org[mailto:rsvp@sanmigueldc.org] to attend STEM Night on March 17. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Special Visits His Eminence Donald Cardinal Wuerl Several of our students had an opportunity to see the Cardinal during their visit to the Vatican Embassy to see Pope Francis. Aside from teaching at the Fordham University Law School,Dr. Negroponte serves as a nonresident fellow with the Brookings Institution and the Wilson Center. Among her research interests, Dr. Negroponte has written on achieving peace in El Salvador following the Cold War. Her husband is a former U.S. Ambassador. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Twinning As part of the Christian Brothers Twinning Program, we are matched with a school in Africa. Nativity School in Shinara Village, Eritrea, is a grade school for 504 students who come from rural families. For Lent, we ask our students to give up money they might otherwise spend on snacks or sodas to benefit our twin school. Last year the students raised over $500 to be used at Nativity for books, water, and school supplies, as well as maintenance on the building. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ High School Applications Our 8th Graders Look Ahead Our 26 8th grade students completed 67 applications and financial aid packets to 15 high schools. Our Graduate Support Director, Mr. Alfonso Motta, is dedicated to finding the right fit for our soon to be alumni. With our newly increased enrollment, we expanded relationships to new schools including Washington International, Sidwell Friends, St. Alban's, St. Anselm's, and Good Counsel. Students also applied to schools where San Miguel alumni attend, including St. John's, Gonzaga, DeMatha, Georgetown Day, Don Bosco Cristo Rey, Georgetown Prep, Archbishop Carroll, and St. Vincent Pallotti. We look forward to seeing where they end up! Thank you to the Holy Trinity parish volunteers who coached 8th grade students on their application essays!
