Defunding the OAS:

A Wise Fiscal Move or a Display of Isolationism?

Following the markup of the State Department authorization bill on July 20 and 21,
the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee voted for a measure, along
party lines, that would cut off all funding for the Organization of American States
(OAS), the primary body of independent states in the region.

The total annual U.S. contribution to the OAS is $48.5 million. Legislators, led
by Connie Mack (R-FL), argue that the U.S. should not be funding an organization
that fails to stand up to the autocratic practices of leftist Venezuelan President
Hugo Chávez and his like-minded counterparts, despite the OAS' Inter-American Democratic
Charter that is supposed to preserve democratic traditions.

A decline in the Venezuelan populist's influence is a goal that enjoys bipartisan
support in the U.S. Congress. However, a step back from the OAS would no longer
afford the U.S. a significant platform to stay engaged in the region and continue
employing soft power that demonstrates to Latin American countries that the U.S.
is a more dependable and stable ally than Venezuela...

NATO's Important Mission in Chicago
