Starbucks coff up for Clinton aide

THE top aide who perked up Bill Clinton during the Monica Lewinsky scandal is to take charge of struggling STARBUCKS in the UK.

Kris Engskov - who during four years with the US president even organised his coffee - was yesterday given the chain's top job here.

The move follows a huge expansion by high street rivals COSTA COFFEE that has left Starbucks looking like mugs.

The company was forced to admit it had got its strategy wrong after posting a £52million loss here two years ago. It currently has 700 coffee shops compared with Costa's 1,200.

Engskov, 39, worked as Clinton's "body man" - US political jargon for the aide most often at the president's side.

His job as special personal assistant was to arrange hotels, transport, refreshment - and general companionship.

The unusual role was spotlighted in the hit American TV show West Wing - with Engskov said to have been the inspiration for the character Charlie Young.

The former aide went on to join Starbucks as a lobbyist - and after a spell in London was given the job of heading up the chain in its heartland of north-west America. Last November he added to the cappuccinos and caramel lattes in Seattle by introducing BEER.

Speaking to Starbucks staff yesterday in Chiswick, West London, Engskov said: "I'm delighted to be coming back to the UK business. It is one of the most dynamic markets in the world for us."

The coffee giant's international chief John Culver said that by appointing Engskov as MD in the UK and Ireland, Starbucks was showing its "commitment to international markets". Engskov replaces Darcy Willson-Rymer, who has left for a new job.
