JULY 25

Clinton visits China
Hillary Clinton, US secretary of state, is due to visit Hong Kong for talks with Donald Tsang, the territory’s chief executive, and members of its legislative council. She will also travel to Shenzhen in mainland China for talks with officials on economic, regional and global matters.

Asia trade and investment
The Asia-Pacific
Trade and Investment Week begins in Bangkok. It includes a number of events, including a trade and investment fair (until July 29) and a Business Forum (July 25-26). The week is co-organised by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific.

Cross-border debt recovery
The European Commission in Brussels is to propose a new procedure to make it easier for creditors to recover up to €600m in cross-border debts. The proposal, designed to help businesses and trade, would allow creditors to preserve the amount owed in a debtor’s bank account under the same conditions in
all EU states.

EU parliament in recess
The European Parliament begins its summer recess, returning on August 29.

Bayreuth Wagner festival
The Bayreuth Festival, the annual celebration of the operatic works of German composer Richard Wagner, begins in the northern Bavarian town (until August 28).

Foreign direct investment
The World Investment Report, the annual publication on global and regional trends in foreign direct investment and related policy issues, is launched by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.

Economic
recovery debate
“Keynes v Hayek” is the title of an event at the London School of Economics tackling how the contrasting theories of the two great economists apply to securing present-day economic recovery. The experts speaking are George Selgin, Lord Skidelsky, Duncan Weldon and Jamie Whyte.

Racing glory at Goodwood
Glorious Goodwood, the horseracing festival and a highlight of the English summer season, begins its five days on the Sussex Downs course.

Disarmament discussed
The 23rd UN Conference on Disarmament Issues opens in
Matsumoto, Japan (until July 29).

WTO council assembles
The World Trade Organisation’s general council, its highest decision-making body, holds a two-day meeting in Geneva.

Olympic exhibition opens
The show “The Olympic Journey: The Story of the Games” opens at London’s Royal Opera House and runs until the close of the 2012 Olympic Games. It will include sporting artefacts, graphics, film and audio from the Olympic Museum in Lausanne.

‘Stevie’ business awards
The winners of the annual International Business Awards, known as the “Stevies”, are announced. The awards will be presented in Abu Dhabi in October.

Urban League hosts Gates
Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, speaks at the annual convention in Boston of the National Urban League, the US civil rights organisation (until July 30).

Salzburg summer of arts
The Salzburg Festival of music, opera and drama begins in the Austrian city (until August 30).

JULY 28

South American summit
The 12 member states of the Union of South American Nations hold a summit in Lima.

Peru president signs on
The inauguration ceremony of Ollanta Humala as president of Peru takes place in Lima on the country’s Independence Day.

Drug use figures reported
A report on drug use by adults and young people in England and Wales, which incorporates statistics from the British Crime Survey, is to be published by the Office for National Statistics. The report is titled “Drug misuse declared, England and Wales – Findings from the British Crime Survey 2010-11”.

JULY 29

Sustainable development
The Society for International Development, which campaigns for sustainable economic, social and political development, holds its triennial world congress in Washington (until July 31). The keynote speaker is Robert Zoellick, president of the World Bank.

Economists holed up
The annual Rocky Mountain Economic Summit is staged at Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Leading US economists and entrepreneurs will focus on manufacturing, economic questions and sovereign debt issues.

Art on show in Tokyo
The Tokyo Art Fair features domestic and international works (until July 31).

Scottish museum reopens
The National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh reopens after a £46m redevelopment that has created 16 new galleries, enabling it to display thousands of new treasures.

World of music
Womad, the festival of world music, features performers such as Mexico’s Rodrigo y Gabriela and Baaba Maal of Senegal during its three-day run in Malmesbury, Wiltshire in the west of England.

Cricket duel renewed
The second Test between England and India begins at Nottingham’s Trent Bridge ground (until August 2).

JULY 30

Rugby giants clash
New Zealand play South Africa in Wellington in this year’s southern hemisphere Tri-Nations tournament.

Soccer’s World Cup draw
The qualifying draw for soccer’s 2014 World Cup in Brazil takes place in Rio de Janeiro.


Sunday
JULY 31

Hungary hosts Grand Prix
The Hungarian Grand Prix takes place in Budapest, the 11th race of this year’s Formula One world championship.
