This month, Truman announced new leadership and the Member Advisory Board, as well as hosted events during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference, at the Global Climate Action Summit, and in a Pennsylvania congressional district. Monique Alcala Monique Alcala is the Special Projects Manager at CASA | CASA in Action, the largest immigrant rights advocacy group in the Mid-Atlantic region. As a veteran campaign professional, she has extensive experience in strategic outreach and coalition building and has worked with diverse constituency groups from both urban and rural areas across Virginia. Over the years, Alcala has been a consultant and advisor to progressive nonprofit organizations and political candidates and worked on campaigns that have helped progressive leaders such as Governor Terry McAuliffe and Congressman Don Beyer secure their victories. A long-time advocate for diversity and inclusion in politics, Alcala was elected and served as President of the Democratic Party of Virginia's Latino Caucus from 2013 to 2015. During this time, she led the political activity of Latino Democrats from across the state. This included working closely with the State Party's committees and candidates at the local, state, and federal level to engage Virginia Latinos in various efforts, as well as cultivating a strong pipeline of new leaders and activists. She was also elected to represent the 3rd Congressional District at the Democratic Party of Virginia's Central Committee from 2012 to 2015. Alcala is a Political Partner at Truman National Security Project and is currently pursuing her Master's degree at Johns Hopkins University, where she studies the intersection of race, ethnicity, inequality, and political participation. Interim Executive Director Bishop Garrison At the start of October, Truman’s outgoing President and CEO Michael Breen will https://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=25a5841dd47d6b96774cc1615c5971dd2727195b99fdd8c1357fde6ffd6f70309a72072fbaa1b61671e1c9944c213fae move on to become the new President and CEO of Human Rights First. Truman’s governing boards have asked Bishop Garrison, longtime Truman member and recently hired Managing Director of Policy and Advocacy, to serve as Truman’s interim Executive Director. Throughout his time at Truman, Breen fostered an extraordinary growth in the organization’s membership as well as its political and policy capacity, reach, and impact. His vision and values will inform the organization’s continued success long after his departure, and his personal mentorship of and friendship with many Truman members and staff was and remains invaluable. Garrison, with his experience in the U.S. Army; President Obama’s re-election campaign; the Obama Administration Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, and Department of Veterans Affairs; and Secretary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign, is well-equipped to lead the organization’s work in the immediate term. Truman Reception During CBCF Annual Legislative Conference On 12 September, Truman co-hosted a reception during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's (CBCF) 48th Annual Legislative Conference. Co-hosts of the event included the New Leaders Council, National Democratic Training Committee, Open Society Foundations, and NewDEAL. Nearly 100 people from the government, nonprofit world, and private sector—including members of the European delegation representing the Transatlantic Minority Political Leadership Conference—gathered together to discuss the importance of diversity in national security and the need for engagement on national security issues across all industries. Congressman Anthony Brown (D-MD) spoke at the event, appealing for young people from diverse backgrounds to become engaged in national security. Truman and the Global Climate Action Summit From 12 to 14 September, the https://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=25a5841dd47d6b96a4048fa5d92175c6791b957bcd974968ddf81a930906eba4389ea8bcbefbd5cc0cd6d0dc497615fa Global Climate Action Summit took place in San Francisco, California, where Truman members participated in and hosted a number of events. The Summit brought together states, cities, businesses, and individuals so as to foster deeper commitments and accelerated action in the fight against climate change. After all, democracies protect private property in important ways, invest in public goods, are more politically stable, make for more dependable allies, and empirically rarely go to war with one another. 09/11/18, Washington Post, https://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=25a5841dd47d6b96a09c925b17422e6bfc7f25d47ba49f2f365e319b4ce76574c8923b3d3af6bc4912d8840bfcca7927 Even progressive academics can be racist. I’ve experienced it firsthand , by Meg K. Guliford, Truman Security Fellow Guliford discusses the racism and bias she has experience at work with academic communities; she writes, “Even as I move about a university with a messenger bag over my shoulder and a stack of books in my arms, they refuse to see me as a member of the professional and intellectual community I’ve worked to join.” 09/12/18, Truman Doctrine Blog, https://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=ee71cc84aa2bd19c6693ae118e3c2ad859a5b1d24be8557fcf1c8bce55120b74eb3264addd525083ed9696fb148d5188 The False Conflation of Coal and National Security , by Scott Schwartz, Truman Defense Council Clean energy would enable the U.S. Navy fleet to extend its time at sea and avoid predictably docking in dangerous foreign ports: Our Marines and soldiers wouldn’t be reliant on fuel convoys to keep the lights on at remote forward operating bases, and our airmen wouldn’t need to commit considerable resources to patrolling a thawing Arctic in the face of unprecedented Russian and Chinese military encroachment. 09/14/18, The Hill, https://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=ee71cc84aa2bd19ce9700a8fa2920bb7292a581c1adef938500b049d92b3d4b7261f1871923913960cfc92ea6f1b449d The inaccessible office: The missing disabled voice in politics , by Brooke Ellison, Truman Political Partner The absence of people with disabilities is ultimately to everyone’s detriment, as better and more comprehensive solutions to complex problems are much more likely to develop when they incorporate diverse experiences and ways of life. This is the moral imperative and practical rationale behind inclusion. 09/17/18, The Philly Inquirer, https://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=ee71cc84aa2bd19cc94e0c838a6846e7835508d30fb7f6ef2be1a872d7cc3b9c30522030640af780c93c5bda109a9f31 When America feels like ‘us’ vs. ‘them,’ how do we welcome new citizens? , by Adam Hunter, Truman Security Fellow Instead of erecting barriers that deter, the United States should encourage and celebrate the immigrants willing to take on the rights and responsibilities our citizenship bestows. Our nation’s greatest strength comes from this way of life; therefore, this Citizenship Day, let us remember that there are few more powerful manifestations of this strength than our capacity to welcome people who share in the ideals that bind us. 09/17/18, San Antonio Express-News, https://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=ee71cc84aa2bd19c6380c8edaa4a3905836ce4504ee37212a4b9c40e141b6cc5418f315183b8ba378ef293d0bc689a60 Retain process for wind farm approval near bases , co-authored by Bishop Garrison, Truman Interim Executive Director The Defense Department has a track record of successfully balancing wind development, and the jobs it brings, with military requirements. The Department’s practice is to base its decisions on extensive site-specific, science-based analyses conducted by the military services and supported by some of the leading civilian experts in the country. This practice should continue. https://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=b155fdde82a069e774beafa83ddc29f9a38b0f5bced0e1832612e977344f7d4b616752934976978447e4e3ded9887cb2 https://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=b155fdde82a069e774beafa83ddc29f9a38b0f5bced0e1832612e977344f7d4b616752934976978447e4e3ded9887cb2 Facebook https://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=b155fdde82a069e7feef2d44f04d6510c905f40b217945c079181d81536ec976b94112bd1faddc00a6b23992845a6144 https://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=b155fdde82a069e7feef2d44f04d6510c905f40b217945c079181d81536ec976b94112bd1faddc00a6b23992845a6144 Twitter https://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=b155fdde82a069e7ff25b4cf300fbaba5a7a6ae56f1c352d31012624ab456e0d4ed532ca4247a2141ff51763bf52623d https://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=b155fdde82a069e7ff25b4cf300fbaba5a7a6ae56f1c352d31012624ab456e0d4ed532ca4247a2141ff51763bf52623d YouTube https://cl.s6.exct.net/?qs=ee71cc84aa2bd19cffc01ef07bc3715d275c1f60c49920f8fa00b1bc011220bc87882ee8ecbf6fdb9cdee3b30f4389ce ---------------------------------------- This email was sent by: Truman National Security Project 1250 I Street, NW, Suite 500 Washington, DC, 20005, US We respect your right to privacy - visit the following URL to view our policy.
