AUGUST 1

Japan and India free trade
A free-trade agreement between Japan and India comes into force. The deal, signed in February, will eliminate tariffs on more than 90 per cent of goods within 10 years.

Business climate of change
The Australia-New Zealand Climate Change and Business Conference opens in Wellington (until August
2), considering the ramifications of changes to the environment and regulations in response.

New mortgage body chief
Paul Smee begins his new role as director-general of the UK Council of Mortgage Lenders, succeeding Michael Coogan. Mr Smee was formerly chief executive of the Payments Council.

Islamic holy month begins
Ramadan, the Islamic period of religious observance and fasting, is due to begin, depending on global location (until around August 29).

China holds Army Day
The country has a national holiday, Army Day, to mark the founding of the People’s
Liberation Army, then known as the Red Army, in 1927.

North Korean spectacle
The Arirang Mass Games are due to begin in Pyongyang, North Korea. More than 100,000 people take part in what is said to be the world’s biggest choreographed event of rhythmic gymnastics, circus-style acts, dancing and marching (until early October).

Beer industry on show
The Great British Beer Festival opens in London, presenting a vast array of domestic and foreign drinks (until August 6).

Wednesday
AUGUST 3

Economic review published
The
next issue of the National Institute Economic Review, the quarterly journal of the National Institute of Economic and Social Research in London, is published. It includes forecasts of the UK and world economies and comment on current issues.

Bids due for Afghan iron
Mining companies hoping to win the rights to what Afghanistan says is the world’s biggest iron ore deposit – an estimated 1.8bn tonnes – in Hajigak, place their final bids. All the shortlisted contenders are Indian, with western companies deterred by the security difficulties.

Obama to turn 50
Barack Obama,
US president, is due to hold a 50th birthday party in Chicago. The event is a fundraiser for Mr Obama’s re-election campaign, but his presence will depend on talks over the debt-ceiling issue. His actual birthday is August 4.

Dublin’s horse days
The Dublin Horse Show, one of Europe’s leading equestrian events, begins in the Irish capital (until August 7).

AUGUST 4

Knowledge providers meet
Wikimania, the annual international conference of the Wikimedia Foundation, takes place in Haifa, Israel (until August 6). The foundation is dedicated to the development and distribution of free knowledge, and includes the Wikipedia website among its projects.

Edinburgh open for art
Edinburgh Art Festival opens in the Scottish capital, featuring a host of exhibitions and events (until September 4).

Friday
AUGUST 5

US craft bound for Jupiter
Nasa is due to launch a rocket bearing the solar-powered Juno spacecraft, which will then orbit Jupiter 33 times in order to discover more about the planet’s origins, structure and atmosphere. The launch is from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida.

Entertainers at the fringe
The Edinburgh Fringe Festival begins, presenting the usual mixture of comedy, cabaret, theatre and music (until August 29). Leading names taking part include actor John Malkovich directing a Celebration of Harold Pinter and Mark Ravenhill writing and directing Ten Plagues, starring singer Marc Almond.

Tattoo makes its mark
The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo takes place on the esplanade of the city’s castle, featuring performances by Scottish and other military troupes from four continents (until August 27).

London hosts top athletes
The two-day Aviva London Grand Prix athletics meeting takes place at Crystal Palace, featuring such stars as Asafa Powell, Phillips Idowu and Christine Ohuruogu.

Saturday
AUGUST 6

US accounting meeting
The American Accounting Association stages its annual meeting in Denver, Colorado (until August 10).

Rugby rivals clash
New Zealand play Australia in Auckland in this year’s southern hemisphere Tri-Nations tournament.

Football League kicks off
The Football League, the three divisions below the English Premier League, begins its 2011-12 season.

Rugby warm-up games
England face Wales at Twickenham and Scotland take on Ireland at Murrayfield in rugby union World Cup warm-up matches.

Sailors set sail at Cowes
Cowes Week, the international sailing regatta, begins in The Solent waters off England’s south coast and the Isle of Wight (until August 13).

Sunday
AUGUST 7

Insurers discuss risk
The American Risk and Insurance Association holds its annual meeting in San Diego, California (until August 10). It will include sessions on flood and earthquake insurance, pensions and systemically important financial institutions.

Cape Verde votes
A presidential election is held in the Republic of Cape Verde, the Atlantic archipelago off the west coast of Africa.

Manchester match-up
The FA Community Shield soccer match at Wembley between the reigning league champions and FA Cup winners is a Manchester derby between United and City.
