A New Partnership Pledges to Change That. In Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), 34% of all food produced annually is lost or wasted. To change this, business leaders joined forces with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to promote Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #12.3 and its pledge to cut food waste per capita and reduce production and supply chain losses by half by 2030. The call was led by IDB partners AlquerÍa, Cargill, and The Coca-Cola Company, as well as Peruvian chef Arlette Eulert. The project, which has been under development since 2016, benefits roughly 10,000 of the 50,000 inhabitants in this geographic area. B2 Infra will invest in transport, energy, water and sanitation, and social infrastructure. To date, NEO has reached more than 310,000 youth, half of which are women, in 10 countries. Led by the IDB, its Multilateral Investment Fund, and the International Youth Foundation, partners include Arcos Dorados, Australian AID, Brazil’s National Federation for Industry, Caterpillar Foundation, Cemex, Microsoft, Forge Foundation, and Walmart. Through the ConnectAmericas for Women platform, the effort will provide training, help women-led businesses engage in value chains and more. Signed by IDB President Moreno, IDB Invest CEO James Scriven, and EIB President Werner Hoyer, this renewed collaboration reflects the partners’ commitment to advancing development through blended finance, co-financing, knowledge sharing, and other efforts. It describes APCA’s framework and demonstrates how “bottom-up” community asset adaptation planning can increase resilience in poor urban areas in the face of limited and unprecise climate information. The partnership was formalized at the ASCRI Annual Conference. Exploring the Future of Work Technological progress provides a golden growth opportunity for emerging economies, but it also threatens to displace human labor, widen income inequality, and contribute to greater informality. Tapping new technologies in a way that mitigates adverse effects and shares benefits among all citizens will require public-private cooperation and smart public policy. This is a primary conclusion of a new study by the IDB and its fellow regional MDBs the African Development Bank, the Asian Development Bank, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. These findings were discussed in Madrid with the coordinator of the study, Mauricio Mesquita Moreira, and a group of Spanish experts. Read more - http://cts.vresp.com/c/?InterAmericanDevelop/77c487e881/5a32ee22ca/688d27df9b NEWS DIGEST MDB Climate Finance Hit Seven-Year High of $35.2 Billion in 2017 Climate financing by the world’s six largest MDBs rose to a seven-year high of $35.2 billion in 2017, up more than 20% from the previous year. The MDBs’ latest joint report on climate financing said $27.9 billion, or 79 percent of the 2017 total, was devoted to climate mitigation projects that aim to reduce harmful emissions and slow down global warming. The partnership agreement was signed at IncluyeTech, an event discussing innovative approaches to promoting the inclusion of disabled people in LAC. Read more - http://cts.vresp.com/c/?InterAmericanDevelop/77c487e881/5a32ee22ca/a592886a22 Global Fund Official Joins Effort to End Malaria by 2020 The Global Fund has officially joined fellow partners the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Carlos Slim Foundation, the countries of Mesoamerica and the Dominican Republic, and the IDB in the Regional Malaria Elimination Initiative (RMEI). RMEI will pool technical and financial resources from each partner, starting with commitments of US$83 million, and will work to convene Central American and Caribbean leaders whose participation is essential to eliminating malaria once and for all. Strengthening Ties with Germany This April, the German Development Bank (KfW) and the IDB renewed their partnership in an MOU signed on the heels of the KfW-IDB Co-financing Exercise, the first of what will become annual meetings between KfW and IDB to explore co-financing and collaboration opportunities. This partnership was further strengthened during the so-called “Deep Dive” organized by the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in May, in which an IDB delegation met with BMZ to explore collaboration in climate change, technical vocational education and training, and transparency. The collaboration will prioritize urban development, urban services management, climate change and environmental protection in urban spaces, and innovation. One of the partners’ first joint activities will be a Mayor’s Seminar to be held alongside the February 2019 C40 meeting in Paris. MetLife Foundation and the IDB to Motivate 400,000 Workers to Save for Retirement Most of LAC’s 130 million workers are not saving for retirement. That’s why the IDB launched the Retirement Savings Laboratory to encourage savings through innovative solutions, behavioral economics, and new technologies. With financing from MetLife Foundation, the IDB Network for Pensions in LAC, and the IDB’s Multilateral Investment Fund, the project will motivate 400,000 low-income workers to save for their old age. In this effort, the IDB has joined Brazil’s National Network for Public Procurement. The New Development Bank and the IDB Group Expand Ties President K.V. Kamath of the New Development Bank, President Moreno of the IDB, and CEO James P. Scriven of IDB Invest gathered at IDB headquarters to strengthen cooperation between their institutions. Specifically, the agreement signed by these leaders will facilitate south-south cooperation, knowledge-sharing, and the financing of sustainable development and infrastructure projects. IDB Vice President Talks Macroeconomic Growth in China In China this April, IDB Vice President for Sectors Santiago Levy delivered lectures on the region’s macroeconomic landscape. Before audiences at Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences and Tsinghua University, Mr. Levy discussed the region’s multi-faceted growth, policy measures to promote growth in the longer term, and the China-IDB partnership. III CEO Summit Convenes Top Leaders in Lima, Peru The III CEO Summit, the most important event of its kind in the Americas, brought together more than 12 heads of state and 1,200 corporate leaders from the hemisphere to explore opportunities for boosting growth and transparency. They also committed to measures to ensure the private sector plays its part in curtailing corruption. The event was supported in part by IDB partners AES, Citi, Coca-Cola, DHL, Facebook, Google, IBM, Invest in Canada, Lexis Nexis, Microsoft, PepsiCo, and Walmart. The launch event, which featured a dynamic discussion on civic engagement in the region, was attended by leaders including IDB President Moreno, H360 President PatrÍcia Villela Marino, and EIU Senior Global Director for Public Policy Leo Abruzzese. Charting the Path Forward at the X OECD LAC Forum The IDB joined forces with the OECD Development Centre and the French Ministry of Economy and Finance to organize the X OECD LAC Forum. This year’s event, titled “Towards Open, Fair and Prosperous Societies,” brought together leaders including IDB Vice President Levy, French Minister of Economy and Finance Bruno Le Maire, and OECD Secretary-General Ángel GurrÍa. In Japan, Talking Infrastructure Investment in Uruguay To boost Asian infrastructure investment in Uruguay, in April the IDB’s Office in Asia co-organized a Seminar on Infrastructure Projects in Uruguay with the Embassy of Uruguay, Uruguay XXI, and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO). Speakers included Uruguayan Ambassador to Japan Cesar Ferrer, IDB Representative in Asia Ichiro Oishi, Daisuke Shiga of JETRO’s Americas Division, and Juan SÁnchez of Uruguay XXI’s Investment Promotion Department. Key highlights include a presentation on Uruguay’s macroeconomic stability. In Denmark, Expanding Partnerships and Engaging the Private Sector This summer the IDB showcased procurement opportunities to a series of companies in Copenhagen, Denmark, providing them an overview of economic tendencies in LAC and highlighting channels for Danish companies to engage the IDB. In addition, the IDB presented the region’s growth agenda to its partners at the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs´ Latin America Network, emphasizing the importance of overcoming gaps in investment and productivity while maintaining low poverty rates and creating opportunities for the middle class. Mind the Middle-Income Trap In April, the IDB the Centre for Economic Policy Research, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and the London School of Economics hosted a London-based event to present new research related to regional patterns of reform, risks of reform reversals, global investment, and financing channels and enablers at city and regional levels. Organized by the China International Contractors Association (CHINCA) in partnership with the IDB and attended by IDB Vice President for Countries Alexandre da Rosa, the event discussed the importance of new drivers for boosting infrastructure construction and connectivity while mobilizing private investments in infrastructure. Addressing Global Challenges with MIT Solve As part of its partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and MIT Solve, a marketplace for connecting innovators with the resources to solve global challenges, the IDB participated in the Annual Flagship Solve event, at which innovators pitched solutions and leaders discussed tackling tomorrow’s challenges. Noteworthy participants included Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, world-famous cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and MIT President Rafael Reif. IDB and its Partners Discuss New Report at Taxation Seminar The IDB has teamed up with the OECD, the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Wilson Center to organize a seminar on taxation in LAC. Bringing together top government officials, the event discussed the findings of a new report by these partners.
