Biographical Information

Henry S. Ensher was confirmed as Ambassador of the United States to Algeria on May 26, 2011. While awaiting confirmation, he served as Senior Advisor in the Office of Afghanistan Affairs at the U.S. Department of State.

Before his nomination, Ambassador Ensher served as Senior Civilian Representative-South, located at the Kandahar Air Field in Afghanistan. Prior to his time in Afghanistan, he served at the U.S. Department of State as Director of the Office of Afghanistan Affairs from 2008 to 2010 and Chair of the Department of Near East and North Africa Area Studies at the Foreign Service Institute from 2006 to 2008. During that time he concurrently served as the Coordinator for Iraq and Afghanistan Provincial Reconstruction Team training. From 2005 to 2006, he held positions of increasing responsibility in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, including Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of State.

Ambassador Ensher served as Deputy Political Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq from 2004 to 2005. Under the Coalition Provisional Authority, he was Governance Coordinator in the Qadisiyah Province from 2003 to 2004. Previous overseas posts include Mexico, Oman, Tunisia, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Algeria and Israel. That service has included tours as political and economic section chief, as well as responsibility for commercial and public diplomacy programs.
Ambassador Ensher has received the Department of State Award for Heroism and the Office of the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Civilian Service. He received a Bachelor or Arts in Political Science from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. His languages include Arabic and Hebrew.
