Hit it low, watch it go. With conditions at Carnoustie extremely firm and fast, players were eager to switch to hollow-bodied driving irons to hit low (https://golfweek.com/2018/07/24/hollow-bodied-driving-irons-were-ideal-at-carnoustie-but-theyre-still-specialty-clubs/) , controlled tee shots that would run seemingly forever. Francesco Molinari, Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth and many others put the driving irons into play. But as the Tour returns to more normal conditions with softer fairways, don’t expect to see the driving irons in play too often.
Higher, faster. Ping’s new i500 irons combine a hollow body with a thin, forged face (https://golfweek.com/2018/07/16/ping-i500-irons/) to boost ball speed and increase distance with a clean design intended to appeal to low- and mid-handicappers. The clubs also produce less spin to gain distance, but because of a higher flight, they still are capable of holding a green because the ball drops from a greater height.

And with a lower compression than the company’s other premium balls, players should expect a softer feel at impact.

Cantlay goes Concept X. Scotty Cameron last week released the new Concept X putters, blade-style putters based on the popular Newport 2 with small wing-like extensions off the heel and toe. Patrick Cantlay, who had used a Newport 2 for years, tried one last Monday at Carnoustie, a Concept X CX-02, and immediately put it into play. Cantlay tied for 12th at the British Open.
