This month, I'd like to take a moment to wish a happy 100th belated birthday to Reade Tompson, a longtime friend and supporter of the DCF.
Through the years, Reade and his wife, the late Sarah Tompson, have supported many causes that mattered to them. And their legacy will continue through the Tompson Family Fund, a legacy fund established at the DCF to benefit Habitat for Humanity, Delaware Hospice, United Way of Delaware, and Neighborhood House.
The Tompsons are an example of how caring people can make a difference in the First State, now and forever. Congratulations, Reade! May we all live as long and generous a life as you!

How Two Wooden Ducks Seeded Life-Changing Scholarships
In 1993, Edward “Ned” Smitheman, an army veteran and retired electrical engineer, was clearing his attic of items he inherited from his parents when he happened upon two rare wooden ducks carved by artist Ira Hudson.

The decoys sold at an auction for $90,750, which Ned used to open an endowed scholarship fund in his parents' names at the DCF. The John B. and Marion A. Smitheman Scholarship Fund, which has grown to $1.9 million through additional gifts and investment management, helps Kent County high school students who want to study engineering.

“He would be so pleased that the DCF has managed his gift so well and that many students are able to fulfill their engineering dreams,” his dear friend Betty Stevens said. “It is a legacy to him, and I’m certain his parents would be proud.”

DCF Capital Grants

From repairing a school roof to providing affordable housing for low-income seniors, this year's capital grants from the DCF will benefit thousands of Delawareans statewide.https://www.delcf.org/2018/07/dcf-awards-298000-in-grants-statewide/

The DCF has awarded a total of $298,000 in 2018 capital grants to 18 organizations around the state. This year's recipients are:

Children & Families First – $7,500
Delaware Botanic Gardens – $25,000
Delaware Theatre Company – $25,000
Elizabeth W. Murphey School – $15,000
Habitat for Humanity New Castle County – $15,000
Ingleside Homes, Inc. – $12,000
Lewes Senior Activity Center – $20,000
Mary Campbell Center – $25,000
Music School of Delaware – $15,000
NCALL – $20,000
Peoples Place II, Inc. – $15,000
Primeros Pasos – $11,250
Sacred Heart Housing, Inc. – $15,000
Sussex County Habitat for Humanity – $15,000
United Cerebral Palsy of Delaware – $3,500
Westside Family Healthcare – $20,000

DCF Welcomes Three New Board Members

The Delaware Community Foundation welcomes three new members to its Board of Directors:

Drew Fennell, chief officer of strategic communication at Christiana Care, leads communications strategy, patient experience, and philanthropic efforts.

Lynn Kokjohn is a native Delawarean who worked at the Dupont Company for 23 years.

Margie López Waite
is head of school at Las Americas ASPIRA Academy, the state's first dual language charter school.

Thank You to Our Outgoing Board Members

The DCF thanks outgoing board chair Tom Sager, along with departing board members Jennings Hastings, Marilyn Hayward, Kay Keenan and Janice Nevin.
