Today's Playbook Power Briefing presented by the Alzheimer's Association By JAKE SHERMAN (sherman@politico.com; @JakeSherman), ANNA PALMER (anna@politico.com; @apalmerdc), DANIEL LIPPMAN (daniel@politico.com; @dlippman), AKELA LACY (alacy@politico.com; @akela_lacy) and ELI OKUN (eokun@politico.com; @eliokun) PLAYBOOK SCOOP -- EDELMAN is advising OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY on its comms strategy as it deals with the Richard Strauss sexual abuse investigation that Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) recently got caught up in, according to a source familiar with the matter. THE SCHOOL has had a long-standing relationship with the global PR firm on a variety of issues prior to the current investigation, which started in April. Edelman has previously advised the school on issues relating to leadership transitions, development and a 2014 scandal with its marching band. THE OSU ACCOUNT is run out of Edelman's D.C. office, according to another source familiar with the matter. An Ohio State spokesman confirmed to us the firm's involvement: "Edelman has consulted with the university throughout the years on a number of different matters both internal and external." An Edelman spokesman declined to comment and said: "We do not discuss the work we do for our clients." IT'S NOT THE FIRST TIME -- The firm has worked with universities going through major scandals before. It represented Penn State in the aftermath of the Joe Paterno sexual abuse scandal; Duke, when it dealt with its lacrosse player case; and UNC, which faced an academic scandal that involved "fake classes" that many student-athletes took. -- JUST POSTED ... AP: "APNewsBreak: Jordan interviewed in doctor sex abuse inquiry," by Kantele Franko in Columbus. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=e8ceba78ffa3bedff96aad8c31e0b2c112ebdb6c6c6a190166351f715db21287983c1d729106a2c66eeefd27a1c4645d MORE ON THE MARIIA BUTINA STORY -- "Maria Butina Was In Contact With Russian Intelligence, Feds Say In New Documents," by NPR's Carrie Johnson: "A Russian woman charged this week with serving as a foreign agent has been in regular contact with Russian intelligence, the Justice Department says, and she attempted to offer sex in exchange for a position with an organization she targeted. "Prosecutors included that information in court documents as part of their request that Maria Butina be detained ahead of her trial because they say she is a 'serious' flight risk." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=f80476628655969df58d59c0b474f7a43b7999817340f93bfcc285e15559cef29aa2c576673bc4a803574329ed8350c2 WHAT'S ON PRESIDENT TRUMP'S MIND -- @realDonaldTrump at 6:44 a.m.: "Congratulations to Martha Roby of The Great State of Alabama on her big GOP Primary win for Congress. My endorsement came appropriately late, but when it came the 'flood gates' opened and you had the kind of landslide victory that you deserve. Enjoy!" ... at 7:27 a.m.: "Some people HATE the fact that I got along well with President Putin of Russia. They would rather go to war than see this. It's called Trump Derangement Syndrome!" ... at 7:33 a.m.: "3.4 million jobs created since our great Election Victory -- far greater than ever anticipated, and only getting better as new and greatly improved Trade Deals start coming to fruition!" PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP in the White House today: "There's never been a president as tough on Russia as I have been." -- ABC'S CECILIA VEGA asked the president if Russia is still targeting the U.S. Trump said no, which flies in the face of what DNI Dan Coats has said. TRUMP INC. -- "'It's just not wise': In past year, Trump's company repeatedly paid property taxes late," by WaPo's David Fahrenthold and Jonathan O'Connell: "President Trump's company missed deadlines to pay property-tax bills in five states over the past year - and those delays cost the company $61,800 extra in penalties, interest and missed discounts, according to government records and local officials. "This spate of missed deadlines was out of character for the Trump Organization, which receives hundreds of property-tax bills every year. Previously, records show, it had a good record of paying them on time." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=f80476628655969d85356031a94d041812280d9067065427270a54833354ecfb68b447ca9d5b534e8d88b99c12a16fd2 THE INVESTIGATIONS ... ICYMI: "Seychelles meetings probed by Mueller included several Russians: exclusive," by NJ Advance Media's Erin Banco: "Several Russians, some linked to the Kremlin, participated in meetings in the Seychelles in January 2017 and are subjects of an ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, according to the island's aircraft data and sources with knowledge of the meetings. Special Counsel Robert Mueller is examining a series of meetings that took place in the Seychelles, an archipelago in the Indian Ocean, as part of a broader investigation into Russian meddling. "The inquiry into the meetings suggests there is growing interest by the Mueller team into whether foreign financing, specifically from Gulf states, has influenced President Donald Trump and his administration. Much speculation has centered on one particular meeting between Erik Prince, founder of the security company Blackwater; Kirill Dmitriev, the director of one of Russia's sovereign wealth funds; and Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, the effective ruler of the United Arab Emirates, also known as 'MBZ.' "Participants of other meetings that week in January, which focused generally on Syria, energy and sanctions, hailed from Russia, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Israel and the U.S., according to three people with knowledge of the meetings and flight manifests obtained by NJ Advance Media. All three requested to remain anonymous because they feared retribution from their respective governments." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=f80476628655969d5d50e604aca4b115909677d4f42ddc0327d9f10f9af8bd5d2a73fe2193c7e47d1343a2d803fe8197 SPOTTED: Valerie Jarrett having dinner last night at Bourbon Steak. TRADE WARS -- "New bipartisan push launched to freeze Trump tariffs," by Burgess Everett: "Sens. Doug Jones and Lamar Alexander are planning to introduce a bill next week to halt President Donald Trump's proposed tariffs on European automakers, hoping to shield the automotive industries in the South from more economic blowback from U.S. allies." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=f80476628655969d4ab37e24264a2367eb736723b4d0a5fa3c1fae68c02695e10cd5be0bdb7521403a6407e601189893 -- "Democrats Could Become a Free-Trade Counterweight to Trump," by WSJ's Greg Ip: "Since the 1940s, the Republicans have been the party of free trade, Democrats the party of protection. Those labels need updating. Mr. Trump's imposition of tariffs on allies and adversaries alike is accelerating a migration of Democratic voters toward free trade and Republicans away from it. Among elected legislators, the median Republican is still pro-free trade and the median Democrat a skeptic, but those lines, too, are shifting. ... "Today, 67% of voters who identify as Democrats or lean Democratic consider free trade a good thing, according to the Pew Research Center; just 43% of Republicans do. Mark Muro of the Brookings Institution has found that coastal urban centers that provide the bulk of Democratic votes have benefited most from globalization, whether free trade, foreign investment, or immigration." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=f80476628655969d9e49cfd36e4e78f03c0853fe7b5c80be0c8a0b119f3c773739e299583c86bb0cfc3c80df4e975ff5 -- "Kudlow: Chinese leader doesn't want a trade deal," by Adam Behsudi: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=f80476628655969db06385407f5786c52b17abf7259f6ee5a82f16d0575443f41f320eb03987f1f836e5d3f9bd23fb3c DEM LEADERSHIP WATCH ... "Crowley lies low after crushing defeat," by Heather Caygle and John Bresnahan: "As chairman, Crowley's primary job is to lead weekly caucus meetings and serve as the main bullhorn to spread House Democrats' message to the public. Crowley's job is even more critical in the run-up to the election, the first time in nearly a decade that Democrats have a chance at regaining control of the House. "But the usually press-friendly Crowley has taken a decidedly different tack in the weeks since his double-digit loss to progressive upstart Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The New York Democrat sat for a five-minute interview with CBS on Sunday but otherwise has eschewed the weekly news conferences on Capitol Hill he routinely gave as the No. 4 House Democrat." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=f80476628655969dadf568509fae9b6f6bd9ff9f98d368be9e744f62e555d55868c7a29ac9660562fee3a50058c11896 JOE LIEBERMAN (yes, that Joe Lieberman) in the WSJ: "Vote Joe Crowley, for Working Families" http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=f80476628655969d68946fc227837671e047873bad2e2672d9a957104eaecfe4af70b42dd5e8be9b20cf8d3e0c92a301 -- ICYMI: Crowley tweeted at 9:50 a.m.: "Still not running." WHAT WALL STREET IS READING -- "Bernanke, Geithner, Paulson Voice Some Concern About Next Crisis," by Bloomberg's Rich Miller: "Federal Reserve policy makers appear confident that they have the weapons they'll need to fight the next financial crisis. Some of their predecessors on the front lines are not so sure. Ben Bernanke, Timothy Geithner and Henry Paulson all voiced varying degrees of concern about America's ability to combat another financial meltdown 10 years after they played prominent roles battling the last one. "While agreeing that the banking system is a lot stronger than it was back then, they saw some weak spots in the country's crisis-fighting arsenal that didn't exist a decade ago. The trio also decried the nation's ballooning budget deficits in a joint briefing with reporters." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=f80476628655969dba1575bc090e0d1a1cc0e41e04ecf4023f997a2b45b4dc3de68af7c85781bdbd8b80882a5efe3f33 DATA DU JOUR -- NATASHA KORECKI: "Poll: Corruption message gaining traction against GOP": "The Trump administration's scandals threaten to take a toll on Republicans in battleground districts this fall, according to new polling suggesting 'culture of corruption' messaging is gaining traction. "Fifty-four percent of voters across 48 Republican-held congressional districts said Republicans are 'more corrupt' than Democrats, compared with 46 percent who said Democrats are 'more corrupt.' According to the online survey of 1,200 registered voters, conducted July 2-5, an even higher number of independents hold Republicans responsible for corruption: 60 percent. Their afflictions - gang violence, domestic brutality and poverty - are neither American national security priorities nor anything that was originally intended to be covered under the laws of asylum. "Mr. Trump has taken monumental steps to shrink the asylum system and discourage people from applying based on a belief that the United States is taking in too many foreigners. The moves are part of a larger plan developing in Washington to reshape the reputation of America as a safe haven ... "The most extreme proposal yet would upend the system by eliminating the use of offices along the border, known as 'ports of entry,' as asylum processing centers. Introduced this spring by members of the leadership of United States Customs and Border Protection, according to a government official with direct knowledge of the plan, it would allow hopeful refugees to apply for protection only from abroad, stranding them for much longer in the conditions they hope to escape." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=040c2c522386be32799e26d8e923a62bd4033d99596e185cdad1ed1e8ad8cf193824c60443cce6fd6b9e3de17f4299d9 -- "Sexual Assault Inside ICE Detention: 2 Survivors Tell Their Stories," by New York Times' Emily Kassie: "ICE has reported 1,310 claims of sexual abuse against detainees from fiscal years 2013 to 2017. "The penalty represents the largest ever antitrust fine levied by Europe's competition authorities against a single company, and marks a significant step by Margrethe Vestager, the EU's antitrust chief, in her ongoing stand-off with the U.S. search giant. The announcement came a month after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said he had ordered agencies to prepare to increase uranium enrichment capacity if a nuclear deal with world powers falls apart after Washington's withdrawal from the pact. And nearly a quarter of all registered voters have served as an unpaid caregiver to a friend or relative with the disease. Alzheimer's remains the only leading cause of death in the United States that cannot be prevented, cured or even slowed - yet. Only medical breakthroughs can change that. The Alzheimer's Association is committed to supporting advancements in research that will lead to the first Alzheimer's survivor.
