Clubs at work. Golfweek’s David Dusek was on the ground at the PGA Tour’s Northern Trust, sharing photos of the equipment (https://golfweek.com/2018/08/28/photo-gallery-equipment-used-at-the-northern-trust/) that many of the pros are using for this year’s FedEx Cup Playoffs. Check out the gear used by many of the best in the game as they try to earn a spot in this season’s Tour Championship.
Purchase pays off. Saturday afternoon, after carding a 73 that included 34 putts, Tyrrell Hatton went to a Golf Galaxy in Paramus, N.J., plunked down $172 and bought a Ping Sigma G Darby (https://golfweek.com/2018/08/26/tyrrell-hatton-buys-putter-at-golf-galaxy-on-saturday-shoots-64-sunday/) putter. Using it Sunday, he shot a bogey-free 64 that included just 27 putts. Over the first three days of the Northern Trust he made 147 feet of putts, but Sunday alone he made over 130 feet and finished the day ranked first in strokes gained putting.
A more stable blade. Scotty Cameron’s new Concept X putters, the CX-01 and the CX-02 (https://golfweek.com/2018/07/16/scotty-cameron-concept-x-putters/) , were designed for players looking for more stability than available with Cameron’s popular Newport 2 putters. The Concept X putters boost the moment of inertia with a multi-material design that pushes more weight to the heel and toe. Vibration-dampening material was added behind the aluminum face insert and under the aluminum sole plate.

Farther, and closer. One avid golfer went through a professional fitting and picked up nearly 30 yards with a 6-iron, the height of his shots soared to help the ball stop more quickly on the greens and his bad pull to the left nearly disappeared. Simply put, a good club fitting is the quickest way to improve your game.

Reed makes a change. Masters winner Patrick Reed was shipped a new G400 LS driver head and several shafts by the company's PGA Tour reps last Wednesday. Testing the gear at home, he opted for a 10-degree head, and using the adjustable hosel Reed gave it a playing loft of 9 degrees. He also switched from an Aldila Rogue Silver 70X shaft into a TPT 15 LKP shaft.
