Smiles “Way over yonder in the minor key…there ain’t nobody that can sing like me.” Folk music, by definition, is embedded in all of our DNA. Most simply put, it is the music of the people. And, together, along with jazz, blues, country, bluegrass and other genres of music, it comprises the DNA of Rock and Roll. I’ve always been fascinated by folk or “roots” music. I couldn’t help but notice Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger during early childhood. Nowadays, I think about Woody and his iconic status all the time. Guthrie influenced some of the most important musicians of the past 100 years—among them, Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia and Bruce Springsteen. Guthrie also influenced one of the more important but lesser known English singer-songwriters of the past several decades, Billy Bragg. With the American roots rock band Wilco, Bragg took dozens of Guthrie’s unrecorded lyrics and set them to music in 1998 for a record called Mermaid Avenue—the name of the street in Coney Island, New York where Woody lived. The music of Mermaid Avenue proved to be so popular that three volumes of it have been released, the latest in 2012. With this simple acoustic performance [ http://cs.is/1QS12v2 ] , Bragg underscores the lasting power of folk music and of Woody Guthrie. Feedback I always welcome and benefit from your feedback.
