Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum won the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in Florida, defeating early favorite Gwen Graham after a late charge in the polls.

Gillum had 34 percent of the vote when the Associated Press called the primary with 87 percent of precincts reporting. Graham, a former congresswoman, was in second with 32 percent.

Graham consistently led in public polling leading up to the primary, but Gillum made a late drive as primary day neared, with support from progressives including Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and a platform that includes support for Medicare-for-all. Gillum has also called for President Donald Trump to be impeached.

Gillum, who would be Florida's first African-American governor if he wins the general election, will face GOP Rep. Ron DeSantis in November.
