If you would like to volunteer, please do take a look at our Celebration Sign-up. Thank you. ---Renee Fried, MS co-clerk Other QUAKER QUOTES AND QUESTIONS Quaker quotes on equality: "If we desire a society of peace, then we cannot achieve such a society through violence. If we desire a society without discrimination, then we must not discriminate against anyone in the process of building this society. If we desire a society that is democratic, then democracy must become a means as well as an end." ---Bayard Rustin, March 17, 1912–August 24, 1987 Bayard? Rustin was born into a Quaker family in West Chester, Pennsylvania, and became a leader in the movement for civil and gay rights. He is credited for introducing Martin Luther King Jr. to the idea of nonviolence as a strategy for social change. King relied on Rustin to organize the March on Washington despite anxiety within the movement leadership that his homosexuality would undermine the cause. "Men, their rights, and nothing more; women, their rights, and nothing less." ---Susan B. Anthony, February 15,1820-March 13, 1906 ? Susan B. Anthony was born into a Quaker family of abolitionists in Massachusetts and collected anti-slavery petitions as a teenager. She was a leading suffragist whose attempt to vote in 1872 and whose subsequent arrest formed the basis for the Anthony Amendment, a bill to grant women suffrage rights. Forty-eight years later, this became the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution. ?Quaker quotes and questions are intended to deepen the understanding of Quakerism in the Sidwell Friends School community. Suggestions and questions may be directed to Cynthia Richie Terrell at ctcabin@gmail.com?. EJC CORNER CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH Two articles of interest: The first article with the history and information on Black History Month is from history professor Daryl Michael Scott of Howard University; the second is from the website History.com. http://asalh.net/blackhistorymonthorigins.html by Daryl Michael Scott for ASALH at www.asalh.org. E-mail: dms@darylmichaelscott.com. The story of Black History Month begins in Chicago during the late summer of 1915. An alumnus of the University of Chicago with many friends in the city, Carter G. Woodson traveled from Washington, DC, to participate in a national celebration of the 50th anniversary of emancipation sponsored by the State of Illinois. Thousands of African Americans traveled from across the country to see exhibits highlighting the progress their people had made since the destruction of slavery. Awarded a doctorate in Harvard three years earlier, Woodson joined the other exhibitors with a black history display. Despite being held at the Coliseum, the site of the 1912 Republican Convention, an overflow crowd of 6,000 to 12,000 waited outside for their turn to view the exhibits. Inspired by the three-week celebration, Woodson decided to form an organization to promote the scientific study of black life and history before leaving town. On September 9, Woodson met at the Wabash YMCA with A. L. Jackson and three others and formed the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH). http://www.history.com/topics/black-history/black-history-month Black History Month, or National African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in US history. The event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every US president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating black history.
