President Donald Trump on Monday afternoon expressed "respect" for the service of Sen. John McCain, who died Saturday, and signed a proclamation to fly the flag of the United States at half-staff.

"Despite our differences on policy and politics, I respect Senator John McCain's service to our country and, in his honor, have signed a proclamation to fly the flag of the United States at half-staff until the day of his interment," Trump said in a statement released by the White House.

McCain died at the age of 81 after battling cancer.

Trump was criticized earlier on Monday for moving the White House flag back to full-staff after it was lowered over the weekend.
