At this time, I have only spoken with Jonathan Shrier, deputy coordinator of the food security initiative at the State Department (they do not have a coordinator). On Monday, I plan to reach out to my friend Dave Lazarus who serves on the Domestic Policy Council as advisor to the President on agriculture policy. He is not the key point of contact on foreign policy but is a friend who can help (he worked for Senator Durbin on global hunger issues). However, your recommendation of a more appropriate point of contact would be appreciated – if appropriate. I am very understanding of the sensitivity of your engagement of officials at the WH and would not want you to do anything close to inappropriate. Thanks again for everything. Let me know who in WH is your contact. I'll help where I can, but I have to be careful to not "lobby" administration- even for a good cause. R. I think it would be best to apprise the administration of our intention to send the letters urging that a meeting of the Security Council be convened to adopt the referenced resolution. I will contact colleagues at the State Dept and/or WH tomorrow unless you, Sandy or Hunter would prefer to reach out to officials in the administration. I think we should collaborate with with other organizations as this will increase the liklihood of success. I plan to issue a press advisory with copies of the letters after they are delivered. What do you think? Thanks again for all of your help and guidance - it is greatly appreciated. all the best, Rick ________________________________ From: Dan Glickman [dglickman@bipartisanpolicy.org<mailto:dglickman@bipartisanpolicy.org>] Sent: Thursday, August 11, 2011 6:14 PM To: Rick Leach; 'sberger@albrightstonebridge.com<mailto:sberger@albrightstonebridge.com>'; 'rrussell@lrbdc.com<mailto:rrussell@lrbdc.com>'; 'hbiden@rosemontseneca.com<mailto:hbiden@rosemontseneca.com>' Subject: Re: WFP USA Statement on the Horn of Africa & Food Security I think you should pursue. You need to decide how widely you publicize this, whether you should give a heads up to anyone at State or WH, and whether we do this alone (which is fine with me) or in conjunction with anyone else. CNN (Anderson Cooper) had a very poignant piece on kids and famine in Somalia. On today. Per the recommendation in the Statement, I am planning to send letters to Secretary Clinton, the UN Secretary General and the current president of the Security Council suggesting that they call an immediate meeting of the Security Council to urge all nations to help secure unfettered humanitarian access to southern Somalia. Please let me know if you think I should not pursue this action. Thank you very much. I will not finalize or release the Statement until you review it – as it calls for specific action of the UN Security Council. I look forward to your comments/input. Thank you very much.
