News Around the School US NEWS MS NEWS LS NEWS Principal's Letter MESSAGE FROM MAMADOU Friends, Last Monday, NPR science reporter Shankar Vedantam came to speak to our community about the ways in which our brains work on both conscious and unconscious levels, and how hidden factors may influence the way we act and impact creativity and innovative thinking. It was a wonderful evening. I am grateful to the Parents of Black Students and the Parents Association for sponsoring this evening event. We wrapped up the first quarter of the year last Thursday. I hope the long weekend gave everyone a chance to rest and relax and prepare for the second quarter. Winter P.E. classes do not begin until November 10, but winter athletic teams begin practice on Monday, November 3. If your children have any questions about winter P.E. or sports, please have them contact Katey Vale (valek@sidwell.edu). Looking ahead, on November 17, students will be dismissed at 12:10 p.m. so that Upper School faculty can take part in an all-school professional development program. Lunch will be available for students at the usual time (12:10), so please encourage your students to grab a bite to eat before heading home. November 21 is Ninth Grade Conference Day. Sign-ups for conferences will take place through Educator Online and will open on November 10. Ninth grade parents will receive e-mail instructions for signing up. We will not have regular classes on November 21. Seniors will have a day off; juniors and sophomores will have grade-level field trips to the Air & Space Musuem, Natural History Museum, and the Holocaust Museum; and freshmen will remain on campus to participate in a special program on mental health. I hope you enjoy this beautiful fall weekend. Please join us on November 10 at 7:00 p.m. in the Zartman Drawing Room for a brainstorming/planning session. Looking forward to seeing many of you on November 10! Congratulations to the Upper School "It's Academic" team for winning its first round last Saturday. This winning performance airs on Saturday, November 29, at 10:30 a.m. on NBC4. The next round of TV taping is Saturday, February 15, at 11:15 a.m. Fans are welcome to come in person and cheer on the team! SIDWELL FRIENDS SNOW CLUB Snow Club is the perfect way to counteract end-of-the-week blahs. Students in grades 6 and above jump on the Calleva Snow Bus and hit the slopes EVERY Friday night in January and February. The bus picks up at 3:30 p.m. in the D.C. campus bus area by the tennis courts and returns to the garage between 11:30 p.m. and midnight. Students can sign up for four, six, or all eight Friday nights to ski under the lights at Whitetail! Snow Club members receive a Night Club card and Friday night transportation to the slopes. Whitetail is our home mountain, but the Night Club card is also good for the sister resorts, Liberty and Roundtop. Your Night Club card is a night skiing season pass good for any of these three resorts on any night of their season (beginning January 9). If you like to ride the slopes with your friends, want to avoid the daytime lift lines, and are a night owl, this is a sweet program! An information session will be held Tuesday, November 4, 6:30-7:30 p.m. in Upper School room 104/106. For more information, contact Quinn McClean at qmcclean@hotmail.com. Events LOWER SCHOOL BOOK FAIR COMING SOON! Start making your book lists! APOLLO ORCHESTRA, SFS CHORUS PERFORMANCE Sunday, November 2, 3:00 p.m. Robert L. Smith Meeting Room The Apollo Orchestra features young musicians from around the globe. COUNSELOR'S CORNER Duct Tape Parenting and Family Matters On Tuesday, November 11, and Wednesday, November 12, at Georgetown Day School and Georgetown Visitation respectively, Vicki Hoefle will be talking about her new book, Duct Tape Parenting, a hands-off approach to parenting with a focus on developing and deepening the relationship between parents and kids without anyone feeling like a doormat or a dictator. In this upbeat, informative presentation, Vicki shares the key ideas behind her popular book. She touches on five key “trip-ups” most parents face in their journey toward raising responsible, resilient children. Then, she offers five key solutions that will help parents get unstuck, no matter what their children’s ages or stages. A book signing will follow the presentation. For more information, please contact Gaby Grebski at grebskig@sidwell.edu. Additionally, Green Acres is also doing an event with Rob Evans, author of Family Matters… Green Acres School is excited to have renowned psychologist, educator, author, and speaker Rob Evans lead a parenting workshop on Tuesday, November 18, at 7:00 p.m. His talk, "Family Matters: Raising Healthy Children in Challenging Times," will outline key dilemmas in raising children and adolescents today and offer concrete suggestions for successful coping at home and school. The presentation is free of charge. Please RSVP at www.greenacres.org/ROB. For more information, please contact Gaby Grebski at grebskig@sidwell.edu. LECTURE FEATURING AUTHOR TONY WAGNER Tony Wagner, author of Creating Innovators: The Making of Young People Who Will Change The World, is coming to Sidwell Friends School to kick off the faculty professional development day on Monday, November 17. Then, the entire community is invited to hear Tony speak about how parents and educators can help nurture innovation in young people in a lecture sponsored by the Christopher Ma Fund for Interdisciplinary Studies. The lecture and reception are from 6:30-8:30 p.m in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room. Child care may be available. Please e-mail events@sidwell.edu or call 202-537-8110 to RSVP. FRESHMAN PIE BAKE The Freshman Pie Bake takes place Sunday, November 23, from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. in the Upper School cafeteria. At this annual event, 9th grade students and their families bake 150 to 200 pumpkin pies and apple pies that are delivered to local homeless shelters. We are asking 9th grade families to contribute some of the ingredients in advance: cans of unspiced pumpkin, cans of evaporated milk, and 5-pound bags of sugar. A few days before the pie bake, we are also asking for bags of apples. All donated ingredients should please be delivered to David Connell’s office (Upper School Community Service Office). In addition, we are also looking for volunteers to arrive at 10 a.m. on November 23 to help set up; volunteers to stay until 4:30 that day to help box the finished pies; and volunteers to deliver the pies to shelters on Monday. Here is the link to sign up: Genius: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0a4ba5a922a20-freshman. This is always a terrific event, and we look forward to seeing everyone there! Please contact David Connell (connelld@sidwell.edu) or Joan Siegel (joanbsiegel@icloud.com) with any questions. ---The 9th grade reps AMBASSADOR EBRAHIM RASOOL Hold the date for an evening talk by South African Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool, who will be speaking with us December 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room. Child care will be provided for children in grades 3-8. Other QUAKER QUOTES "True silence is the rest of the mind, and is to the spirit what sleep is to the body---nourishment and refreshment." ---William Penn "DANCING SHOES": HELP THE ALUMNI MAGAZINE! The Alumni Magazine is putting together a feature article on the history of school dances at Sidwell Friends (including Homecoming and the Prom) for a future edition. We'd like to incorporate shoes (yes, shoes!) as a design element. High heels, funky sneakers, boots, loafers--the variety of shoes will represent the style and preferences of today's students, which will contrast in a fun way with archival photos from yesteryear's dances. We are looking for parents or students willing to take a photograph of the shoes worn that night and e-mail it to alumnimagazine@sidwell.edu. Here's what we need: ---high resolution/large format photos (if using a cell phone, select the largest size when sending it) ---one shot of both shoes, and one shot of a single shoe, shot against a solid background.
