QUAKER QUOTES DEADLINE FOR NEWSLETTER SUBMISSIONS News Around the School US NEWS MS NEWS LS NEWS Principal's Letter MESSAGE FROM MAMADOU Friends, I hope you were able to attend last weekend’s One Act Festival. In each performance, student actors portrayed the existential meditations of a different animal, ranging from a turkey who dreams of learning to play the saxophone despite all odds to a cat who ponders the meaning of her existence. Through poignant, witty, and compelling performances, the student actors captured the essential questions that all humans grapple with: Why am I here? Why do I do what I do? What is the meaning of life? Congratulations to all of our student actors and the theater tech crew, and to arts faculty John Elko and Gil Thompson, for a phenomenal production! This past weekend’s Homecoming events were a huge success! It was wonderful to see so many of you here on campus enjoying the various athletic events and the club fair. We have two important College Counseling events to highlight. The first, “The Admissions Game,” which will take place tomorrow (Monday, October 20), at 6:30 p.m., is for all 11th grade students and parents. A light dinner will be served in the dining hall between 6:00 and 6:30 p.m., so please stop by for a quick bite before the program begins. The second College Counseling event this week takes place on Thursday, October 23, and is for parents of 10th graders. The program will offer a thorough presentation on the role of standardized testing in the college admissions process. I wish you all a very good week! With warm regards, Mamadou Guèye Interim Principal Important Dates: October 20: “The Admissions Game,” 11th grade students and parents, 6:30 p.m., RLS Meeting Room. Events COMMUNITY MEETING FOR WORSHIP Please join families, faculty, staff, alumni, and former faculty and staff on October 19 at 10:30 a.m. in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room. A child-friendly Meeting for Worship will be available for children ages 4 and up, and refreshments will be served at the rise of meeting. INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS CHORAL FESTIVAL The Upper School chorus, along with choruses from other area independent schools, will perform Tuesday, October 21, at 8:00 p.m. at the Washington National Cathedral. Admission is free. Paid parking is available in the Cathedral garage. QUALITY OF COMMUNITY HEALTH AND PARENT PEER GROUPS The Quality of Community Life Committee is recruiting facilitators for Parent Peer Groups. Sidwell Friends has a longstanding, unique tradition of offering Parent Peer Groups for grades PK through 12. These groups are for parents and facilitated by parents of each respective grade with the agenda collectively determined by those attending. The intention of the peer groups is to foster a confidential, comfortable opportunity for parents to discuss non-academic issues on their minds. A rewarding way to meet fellow parents and volunteer is to become a trained facilitator for a Parent Peer Group. One training session will be held at the Middle School on Wednesday, October 22, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. You will learn how to foster an engaging dialog for your peers. Barbara Conte (Lower School health care coordinator) and Michelle Pokorny Parker (Middle School counselor, psychologist, and all-school diversity coordinator) will conduct the training. Please e-mail Joslyn Hills (hillsjoslyn@gmail.com) or Felice Roggen (froggen@mac.com) to sign up or for more information. GAMETIME! VARSITY FIELD HOCKEY, BOYS' AND GIRLS' CROSS COUNTRY This week we have two featured teams: Field Hockey on Thursday, October 23, against Madeira. Game at 4:15 p.m., pregame party at 3:45 p.m. in the courtyard. Cross Country on Saturday, October 25, at the Agricultural History Farm Park in Derwood, Maryland. 1:00 p.m. start time. Bring a picnic and enjoy the scene. Check the athletics page for directions and a guide for first-time cross country meet spectators. (This is an especially good meet for spectators as there are multiple opportunities to view the runners as they traverse the 3.1-mile course.) Look for the red SFS tent and "Go Quakers" banner---there will be cookies, pretzels, apples, and cider. Multiple races for boys and girls will be run. Spectators are encouraged to share their photos of the game by tagging @SidwellFriends with #GoQuakers or by e-mailing webbk@sidwell.edu. Winning photographer gets a free baseball cap! This concludes our fall GAMETIME! program. We thank all of you for coming out to cheer on the varsity teams, and we look forward to seeing you again for winter sports. We welcome your feedback or suggestions about GAMETIME! Please send comments to the PA Athletics Committee clerks, Andrew Aurbach (andrew.aurbach@gmail.com) and Estee Portnoy (Estee.Portnoy@jumpdc.com), or to Kathi Webb (webbk@sidwell.edu). EVENING WITH NPR SCIENCE REPORTER, AUTHOR OF "THE HIDDEN BRAIN" Shankar Vedantam is the National Public Radio (NPR) science reporter and the author of The Hidden Brain: How Our Unconscious Minds Elect Presidents, Control Markets, Wage Wars, and Save Our Lives. He will address the Sidwell Friends community and answer questions about his work on Monday, October 27, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room. Shankar's book explores how unconscious biases influence people. The fascinating topics that he studies and reports on touch many of the values and principles embraced by the students, parents, and faculty who make up SFS’ wonderful community. Shankar is an ideal person to lead a discussion and open dialog, as he studies human behavior from a scientific point of view. His reports are always eye-opening and fascinating. He is a thoughtful and experienced speaker, having lectured at Harvard and Columbia Universities. Shankar was a fellow with the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University and served a two-year term as a senior scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C. This event is sponsored by the Parents of Black Students and is open to the entire Sidwell Community. You do not need to RSVP to attend. If you would like to submit questions to Shankar, please e-mail mbross@verizon.net by Friday, October 24. ORCHESTRA, OPERA, AND THE SIDWELL FRIENDS CHORUS Mark your calendars for Sunday, Nov. 2., for a musical afternoon featuring the Sidwell Friends Chorus, vocalists from the Washington Opera’s Domingo-Cafritz Young Artists program, and the Apollo Orchestra. The concert, which features works by Puccini, begins at 2:30 p.m. in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room. LOWER SCHOOL BOOK FAIR COMING SOON Start making your book lists! The Lower School Book Fair will take place on Saturday and Sunday, November 8 and 9, at Politics and Prose (5015 Connecticut Avenue, NW). All SFS families are invited to participate by buying books and more during these two days. SIDWELL FRIENDS IS GOING TO THE OPERA! Join us at the Kennedy Center for a performance of La bohème, featuring Alyson Cambridge ’97. Alyson plays the part of Musetta on November 1, 4, 7, 9, 12, and 15. The Sidwell Friends community has a special opportunity to purchase discounted tickets to the Sunday, November 9 show. When booking tickets, use code 187278 for 10% off Orchestra, Tier 1, and Tier 2 seats. EVENING LECTURE FEATURING AUTHOR TONY WAGNER Tony Wagner, author of Creating Innovators: The Making of Young People Who Will Change The World, is coming to Sidwell Friends School to kick off the faculty professional development day on Monday, November 17. That evening, the entire community is invited to hear Tony speak about how parents and educators can help nurture innovation in young people in a lecture sponsored by the Christopher Ma Fund for Interdisciplinary Studies. The reception and lecture are from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Please e-mail events@sidwell.edu or call 202-537-8110 to RSVP. Other "DANCING SHOES": HELP THE ALUMNI MAGAZINE! The Alumni Magazine is putting together a feature article on the history of school dances at Sidwell Friends (including Homecoming and the Prom) for a future edition. We'd like to incorporate shoes (yes, shoes!) as a design element. High heels, funky sneakers, boots, loafers--the variety of shoes will represent the style and preferences of today's students, which will contrast in a fun way with archival photos from yesteryear's dances. We are looking for parents or students willing to take a photograph of the shoes worn that night and e-mail it to alumnimagazine@sidwell.edu. Here's what we need: ---high resolution/large format photos (if using a cell phone, select the largest size when sending it) ---one shot of both shoes, and one shot of a single shoe, shot against a solid background. That's it! Thanks in advance for helping.
