The groups are spending a combined $20 million on races this month. THE NUMBERS - Baker surges in latest Boston Globe tracking poll: Republican Charlie Baker leads Democrat Martha Coakley in the Boston Globe's weekly tracking poll of Massachusetts gubernatorial race, 45 percent to 36 percent, the Globe's Jim O'Sullivan reports, the result of movement of independents into the Baker column. The poll is the first showing the race as anything but a near tie in recent weeks. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=bbec527bf827ecdff6ec553c3fa9c049a04110f13de17aae541b817ddce4ed95 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=bbec527bf827ecdff6ec553c3fa9c049a04110f13de17aae541b817ddce4ed95 Coakley's camp was quick to dismiss the result as an outlier. "[T]he Globe poll is the only public poll to show such intense volatility in the race for Governor, going from Baker up 3 three weeks ago to Coakley up 5 two weeks ago, to even last week and Baker up 9 this week.Every other public poll has shown a very stable campaign with very little movement over the past month," said Coakley aide Doug Rubin in a statement, who added that the campaign's internal polls show a margin-of-error contest. -On cue, the Coakley aligned Massachusetts Independent Expenditure PAC released a poll conducted by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner research showing Coakley and Baker essentially tied among likely voters: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=bbec527bf827ecdf05fe404c66a6629b4d21a63967999ebd897dbaecc3064612 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=bbec527bf827ecdf05fe404c66a6629b4d21a63967999ebd897dbaecc3064612 CASH RACE - RNC hauls in $8.1 million in first half of October: That's on top of a $5 million line of credit also available in the final stretch of the midterms. The group says it took out the line of credit to ensure that "committees and state parties had the necessary resources for the final days." The two-week fundraising total brings the RNC's total haul to more than $176 million for the cycle. The committee ended Oct.15 with $6.7 million on hand. EBOLA GETS POLITICAL IN N.Y. - Confirmed New York case draws quick rebuke from GOP: Republican nominee for governor Rob Astorino jumped on the news, slamming President Barack Obama and Gov. Andrew Cuomo for refusing to ban travel from western Africa. 'Somehow political correctness was deemed more important than public safety," he said. 'I have been repeatedly calling on both President Obama and Governor Cuomo, beginning on October 7, to shut JFK and Newark to potentially infected passengers as matter of common sense. When President Obama refused, I called on Governor Cuomo to order his Health Department to shut down gates at JFK because they were a clear public safety risk. Nothing was done." The doctor who's apparently contracted the disease arrived at JFK from Brussles. Jeanne Shaheen said it doesn't make sense and Obama is 'exactly where he needs to be' - in Washington. 'We have a lot going on,' Shaheen said during an hourlong debate with Republican Scott Brown at NH1's studio in Concord, New Hampshire, which was broadcast live on WBIN-TV ... Brown, as he did in their first debate on Tuesday night, repeatedly said Shaheen votes with Obama '99 percent of the time' - tying her to the president whose coattails swept her into office in 2008." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7f5406198c378e707d7eb84fc0db4471e89216a38c83f4f7b8d13d613d44d179 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7f5406198c378e707d7eb84fc0db4471e89216a38c83f4f7b8d13d613d44d179 SD-Sen: A four-way debate focused heavily on Republican Mike Rounds - the former governor of the state - and his management of a controversial EB-5 visa program. Sam Brownback and Sen. Pat Roberts needed? The Kansas City Star highlights research - also reported earlier in the week by Mother Jones - that a sports championship right before an election tends to brighten moods and rub off on incumbents to the tune of 1.5 percentage points or so. That could be critical in a pair of closely watched races in which the GOP incumbents are facing stiff challengers and races that could potentially be nail-biters. The Royals and Giants are tied at one game apiece; Game 3 is tonight in San Francisco. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7f5406198c378e70b8917cdd62cfe7b0293bdc8be7703aee43d2ccb0383b4770 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7f5406198c378e70b8917cdd62cfe7b0293bdc8be7703aee43d2ccb0383b4770 TODAY ON POLITICO - "'Meltdown Mike' gets emotional," by Alex Isenstadt from Murphysboro, Ill.: "In a year of consultant-scripted candidates, Mike Bost is defying the trend - in spades. The Illinois Republican's explosive behavior on the floor of the state legislature - paper-throwing, microphone-slamming, Bible-invoking tirades - have made him a YouTube sensation and one of the most controversial House candidates of 2014. But Bost, who also once hunted down and killed a beagle that bit his daughter, isn't apologizing. To the contrary: The candidate Democrats have dubbed "Meltdown Mike" is putting his emotion at the heart of one of the nation's most competitive and closely watched congressional races." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7f5406198c378e7048f46a07f8ec229384f5cfe7529c10ac7871d35e85a36e1c http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7f5406198c378e7048f46a07f8ec229384f5cfe7529c10ac7871d35e85a36e1c -- "Clinton takes a shot at banks, Walker," by Katie Glueck, with Maggie Haberman: "Hillary Clinton on Thursday sounded a sharply populist note as she framed herself as a foe of big banks and also took a veiled shot at potential 2016 opponent Scott Walker during a fiery speech in Minnesota. Clinton, the former secretary of state and possible 2016 Democratic front-runner, has been criticized by some on the left as being too close to Wall Street. But she took a tough, progressive line as she stumped for Sen. Al Franken and Gov. Mark Dayton, both Democrats who are expected to handily win their races, at an appearance at Macalester College in St. Paul." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=9d1703a2fa8359dcea35a948b0a1a27ec20e54962b2957bc7e70d7d26eb357a2 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=9d1703a2fa8359dcea35a948b0a1a27ec20e54962b2957bc7e70d7d26eb357a2 TODAY ON CAMPAIGN PRO -- "Hogan giving Brown, Maryland Democrats run for their money," by Kevin Robillard: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=9d1703a2fa8359dc0bea6d02efc01e39e0489897d200642591ccbc47b489664b http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=9d1703a2fa8359dc0bea6d02efc01e39e0489897d200642591ccbc47b489664b AIR WARS - Ending Spending Action Fund is up with a new ad campaign in New Hampshire targeting Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen that features her comments during a recent debate in which she said she approves of President Barack Obama sometimes and disapproves at others. The remark drew a laugh from the audience. The spot is part of the group's $1 million campaign in the state's Senate contest. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=9d1703a2fa8359dc40b33913a1de4741068432547ba3b41a88fa563e2b2d3a2a http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=9d1703a2fa8359dc40b33913a1de4741068432547ba3b41a88fa563e2b2d3a2a Progressives go after Brownback in Kansas: Progressive Kick, a super PAC, and National Nurses United have joined forces to turn out votes against Gov. Sam Brownback in Kansas, The groups, who say the Republican has made deep cuts to education and blocked health care access to thousands of Kansans, has launched a six-figure satellite TV and Pandora radio ad campaign. The TV ad, supported by a $144,000 buy. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=9d1703a2fa8359dc93f68dfdaabd1353211503d046b53cfc9f218e0d96a8b544 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=9d1703a2fa8359dc93f68dfdaabd1353211503d046b53cfc9f218e0d96a8b544 CAMPAIGN INNOVATIONS - Campaigns & Elections is out with its "Influencers 50" list, highlighting the biggest - and sometimes the newest - names in politics that are changing the way campaigns are run. Bruce Braley "voted to raise taxes on every single Iowa taxpayer." The ad refers to Braley's 2010 vote against extending the Bush-era tax cuts for another two years. It was a protest vote. Braley, who is running for Senate in Iowa, opposed extending the tax cuts for individuals earning more than $200,000 a year ($250,000 for couples). Just because Braley cast a protest vote against that bill doesn't mean that he favored raising everybody's income taxes. In fact, he clearly didn't. A little more than two years later, Braley voted for the "fiscal cliff" deal that raised tax rates on those earning more than $400,000 a year ($450,000 for couples), and permanently retained the rates for all others. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=9d1703a2fa8359dcf82fb9e7abe46c756c025e36496ac4285a4642bb04ef0092 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=9d1703a2fa8359dcf82fb9e7abe46c756c025e36496ac4285a4642bb04ef0092 -- Fact-checking the Iowa Senate race: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=9d1703a2fa8359dc34ad6d3bf1bd85aa578b346790c8f75643f1eda208a0ff44 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=9d1703a2fa8359dc34ad6d3bf1bd85aa578b346790c8f75643f1eda208a0ff44 CODA - QUOTE OF THE DAY: "I probably have the most anti-Obama district represented by a Democrat in the nation." - West Virginia Rep.
